Ironmen Offensive Explosion Overwhelms East Gaston in Conference Showdown
Written by : Sloan Britton
Cherryville’s offense was firing on all cylinders Friday night, piling up an incredible 733 yards of total offense in a dominant performance against East Gaston.
Quarterback Jayden Adams turned in another huge night, throwing for 467 yards and five touchdowns. With his performance, Adams continues to close in on a couple of Cherryville single-season school records, including passing yardage and touchdown passes.
The Ironmen weren’t one-dimensional either.
Jackson Heavner once again led the rushing attack, finishing with more than 150 yards and two touchdowns. Heavner continues to give Cherryville a dangerous presence on the ground to go along with its explosive passing game.
One of the unsung heroes of the night was Enijahe Whitworth, who hauled in three touchdown passes and finished with more than 100 receiving yards. Narian Hopper, Elijah Proctor and J.J. McElhaney also found the end zone as the Ironmen got contributions from all over the field.
And you can’t talk about 733 yards of offense without giving some love to the big men up front.
Cherryville’s offensive line kept Adams clean and gave him time to attack downfield, while also opening running lanes for Heavner and company. It was a complete offensive effort from the guys with the ball to the ones doing the dirty work in the trenches.
The defense did its part as well, holding East Gaston to 18 points and continuing to make plays when the Ironmen needed them. Maddox Carrigan, Landry Pruitt and Zach Deaton helped lead the defensive effort on a night where Cherryville controlled the game on both sides of the football.
With the win, Cherryville moves to 5-2 and currently sits at the No. 8 seed in the West Region, putting the Ironmen in position to battle for that valuable first-round bye.
But there’s still plenty of work ahead.
Cherryville now turns its attention to a huge matchup with the Burns Bulldogs. Both teams will enter the showdown at 5-2, setting the stage for one of the biggest games of the season.
Burns comes to Rudisill Stadium on Oct. 16 with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
The Ironmen are rolling. Now comes another major test.
