KPI Softball When athletes are made the center of the developmental process, their dreams can become reality.

Softball is a single-leg sport!

Don’t get us wrong—we still do plenty of bilateral work.

But at some point, that strength needs to transfer to one leg.

Hitting.
Pitching.
Throwing.
Running.
Changing direction.

Softball constantly asks athletes to produce, absorb, and redirect force from one leg.

strength should be built doing both.

Learn to use it with one!

Who is the most important person in your softball journey?

Your coach?
Your parents?
Your teammates?
Your organization?

They all play a role.

But none of them can want it more than YOU.

Coaches change.
Teams change.
Organizations change.

Your development ultimately belongs to you.

Take ownership of your training.
Take ownership of your effort.
Take ownership of your future.

You are the system that never leaves.

Stuck looking at things from the same perspective?

Same angle.
Same eyes.
Same opinion on what needs to change.

Eventually, you’re going to keep seeing the same solution.

Technology gives us the ability to look at movement from different perspectives, measure what the eye can’t see, and challenge what we think is happening.

Sometimes the answer isn’t another cue.

It’s a better perspective.

Who or what determines your success in the cage?

Your coach?
The drill?
The machine?
The technology?

They can all help.

But ultimately, you determine your success.

Your intent.
Your effort.
Your ability to make adjustments.
Your willingness to attack the things you’re not good at.

The cage provides the opportunity.
You determine what you get out of it.

Softball player development is 10 years behind baseball.

And honestly, we keep choosing to stay there.

“Here’s what worked for me.”

“Insert current best player does it, so everyone should.”

“We’ve always done it this way.”

Those aren’t development systems.

They’re opinions.

Baseball spent years exposing the flaws in this exact thinking, yet softball continues recycling the same tired arguments.

Stop coaching every athlete based on what worked for one athlete.

Stop defending methods because they’ve been around forever.

Measure it. Test it. Prove it.

Did the athlete get stronger?
Did they throw harder?
Did they hit the ball harder?
Did their movement improve?
Did it transfer to games?

If you can’t answer those questions, how do you know your training actually worked?

Tradition doesn’t equal truth.

Objective data wins.

Upper body movement quality is crucial to softball player development.

Two areas we pay close attention to:

Internal & External Rotation
Scapular Upward Rotation

Why?

Because the shoulder needs to move efficiently through large ranges of motion at extremely high speeds when hitting, throwing, and pitching.

It’s not just about getting the upper body stronger.

Build strength AND movement quality.

The quick fix doesn’t stick.

Real development takes time.

The best coaches don’t chase shortcuts—they build systems that create lasting change.

Stop searching for the next magic drill.
Start building habits that hold up under pressure.

Long-term development always beats short-term fixes.

We typically see hitters fall into two categories with their front shoulder:

1. Fly Open
The front shoulder opens too early, causing them to lose barrel direction and adjustability.

2. Lack of Space
They’re so focused on “staying closed” that they trap themselves and don’t have enough room to clear the body and release the barrel.

The answer isn’t always “keep your shoulder closed.”

Some hitters need more control.
Others need more space.

Same problem area. Completely different solutions.

Systems don’t go back to college.

Systems don’t get a “real” job.

Systems don’t quit when things don’t go as planned.

A great system adapts.
It individualizes.
It objectively tells you what needs to improve.

People change.
Systems endure.

Systems > Opinions.

Every athlete has their own path to PRs.

Some improve quickly.
Others build momentum over months.

The goal isn’t to compare your progress to someone else’s.
It’s to keep raising your ceiling.

Trust your process.
Celebrate your PRs.
