Land Speed Racing History Lives Here!

In October 1990, legendary three-time World Land Speed Record holder Art Arfons made his final competitive appearance at the Bonneville Salt Flats with a heavily re-engineered version of Green Monster #27.

Following a terrifying incident the previous year where his radical two-wheeled design went airborne at 350 mph, Arfons returned to the salt with a safer, four-wheeled configuration. The homemade vehicle was exceptionally lightweight at just 2,000 pounds and drew its immense power from a General Electric J85 jet engine capable of generating 4,500 pounds of thrust.

Despite Arfons' unparalleled experience and the vehicle's immense power-to-weight ratio, the 1990 attempt faced significant mechanical hurdles. The team battled intense, bone-jarring vibrations and severe handling issues on the salt, limiting the machine's performance to recorded top speeds of 177, 308, and ultimately 338 mph.

Recognizing the limitations of the setup and the physical toll of the runs, Arfons officially retired from land speed racing after this event, closing out a historic career that defined the golden jet-age of speed.
