As the race director, I share some humbling words as race day approaches.
Do you know the history of MadCity?
In April of 2007, the Mad City 100k was born out of a dream that Tim Yanacheck had to provide an opportunity for the USA a spot into the World Championships. There have been well known pro runners who have come to hopefully gain their spot on Team USA at MadCity since the beginning.
Runners have also come to conquer a new distance in the 50k and the 100k while racing alongside those pros.
A relay was added to bring more fun to the race and give people an opportunity to run a portion of an ultra while building upon the community of Madison, WI.
In late 2023 the race changed hands in the hopes of continuing this local and national old school road race, which still remains one of only a handful of road ultras, while fostering that community.
All of the money that comes in goes right back into expenses for the race, the community, and prize money for the National champions. This year those expenses outweigh the registrations. Even with basic bare bones expenses while creating a world class event, raising costs, and trying to keep registration fees affordable we find ourselves in the red.
In an effort to be transparent we share this so we can hopefully make it the 20 year mark.
If you are a supporter of this event, the community of running, or Madison in general we encourage you to sign up, donate, or sponsor this year. The future of MadCity depends on it.
Thank you
