I just found this beautiful commentary on training from Keith Thorn on Linked In. I thought you might appreciate it:

I have spent enough years on the Aikido mat, in classrooms, in relationships, and simply trying to understand myself to recognize a peculiar human habit: we spend an extraordinary amount of energy trying to prove we are good, when that same energy could be spent becoming better.

There is something exhausting about constantly defending the person we believe ourselves to be. We explain our intentions, justify our decisions, protect our reputations, and sometimes argue so fiercely for our goodness that we leave no room to discover where we might still be wrong. Yet the most remarkable people I have known were rarely those who needed everyone to recognize their wisdom. They were the ones still curious enough to question it.

After more than thirty years of Ki-Aikido, I have learned that the moment I become more interested in demonstrating my ability than improving it, my growth begins to slow. Life, I suspect, is no different. Perhaps maturity arrives when we no longer need every conversation to end with our vindication, every mistake to come with an explanation, or every disagreement to produce a winner.

The goal was never to convince the world we were good. It was to become a little better than the person who woke up yesterday.

And the beautiful thing about that journey is that we never have to pretend we've arrived.
