WTF?? (What’s that fish?)

This week’s fish are a bit shorter and rounder than last week’s fish but light blue lower cheeks and a rose belly. Males are larger, more colorful and rounded than females. They all have a dark blue tab on their gill cover which helps with the ID. The spawning bed is on sand or silt and sites can be close together. The male keeps it well defended. Get out there and enjoy our beautiful local fish!

Thanks to everyone that joined us at Pearl Lake on Sunday! It was a fun chance to get together, socialize, dive, and cookout with no particular agenda! We all definitely need more of this!

Remember, we have fun dives scheduled every Thursday! This week - Meet at the shop at 4PM or Devils Lake North Shore (by the tracks) at 5PM. Call the shop to let us know you're coming!

Congratulations to Kendall for earning his Air Diluent CCR rating on the Dive Talk GO rebreather! He rocked all of the skills and scenarios! We can’t wait to see where he takes it diving! And we look forward to seeing him back for Decompression and Normoxic classes in coming months!

WTF?? (What’s that fish?)

This week’s fish are a bit shorter than last week’s fish but with a beautiful dark edging to the fins under their body and have beautiful red eyes like the fish two weeks ago which helps with the ID. The spawning bed is on a rocky or weedy shallow bottom and eggs go from spheres to a cloaking in white material as they mature. The male keeps it well defended. They typically grow 6–10 inches long, though larger individuals can exceed a pound they are opportunistic predators, feeding on insects, crayfish, and small fish. And they often hover close to structure where they can dart out to ambush prey. Get out there and enjoy our beautiful local fish!
