Please join Angel City Derby in celebrating our transgender and gender diverse members! The roller derby community thrives because of its trans membership–their dedication, visibility, and legacy continues to shape our sport. We are indebted to the trans community’s contribution to our sport and culture. Today we recognize and celebrate our trans members and continue to protect and fight for their rights and joy!
Being an ally in Los Angeles:
Educate! Take initiative and educate yourself f by seeking out trainings and resources to build affirming spaces for the transgender community. Los Angeles is home to the Los Angeles LGBT Center, the Trans Wellness Center, PFLAG Los Angeles, and additional organizations that can help guide allies in their education. Remember, it is our responsibility as allies to take education into our own hands.
Activate! Get involved and advocate for transgender equality. There are many Los Angeles-based advocacy groups doing this important work. Allies can contact Gender Justice LA, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, the Trans Wellness Center, and PFLAG Los Angeles to learn how to best support the trans community.
Lead with Love! Familiarize yourself with bell hooks’ teachings on “love ethic,” the radical, intentional practice of using empathy, care, compassion, and love to dismantle oppressive systems. By leading with love, allies can focus on radical affirmation, celebrating trans joy, and providing unwavering protection and support for the community. Leading with love is an act of resistance where allies treat trans existence as sacred and actively working against discrimination.
