If I am killed
for simply living,
let death be kinder
than man.
-Althea Davis-
It is a heartbreaking thought to place beside a snake, an animal that does not know why its presence can inspire such hatred. It simply moves through the world, seeking shelter, a meal, and another day.
Yet we too often turn an encounter into a death sentence. Not because harm has occurred, but because fear has arrived first.
We do not have to hold a snake, love it, or welcome it close to choose compassion. We can respect its space without demanding that it surrender its life.
A snake does not need to prove its worth to deserve a place in the world. Its life is not an offense. Its existence is not an invitation for cruelty.
Let us be kinder than the fear we inherited. Let “I saw a snake today” become a story of a life observed, not a life ended.
