A couple weeks ago, I had the honor of serving as backup doula to a couple I had never physically met. It’s a lot to have someone walk into your hospital room for an unknown amount of hours to help you through one of life’s most transformative events! Sometimes I don't get the chance to prepare a husband, partner, or supportive family member before labor begins—and that's okay! If they're willing to learn, doulas provide on-the-job coaching so they can confidently support their loved one through one of life's most significant events. Birth is a team effort, and everyone can have a meaningful role to play💜

One of the most rewarding parts of being a doula is helping moms heal from terrible birth experiences. Your body heals, but the disappointment can remain. Maybe it was a procedure performed without consent, maybe you felt rushed or pressured into decisions or never had anyone explain the "why” in a way you could truly understand. A new birth experience rooted in patience, respect, and informed choice can make a world of difference. I have seen this happen firsthand numerous times...it’s heart healing and it’s wonderful 💜

...I can’t do this... I can’t achieve what’s in front of me... It’s too hard... I don’t have what it takes...

And then something amazing happens. You do it.

You reach deep within yourself to find the grit and determination you didn’t know was in there. You make the choice to keep going —and you succeed. Birth is my favorite space to witness this phenomenon. The strength, resilience, and courage on display will be with you the rest of your life 💜

There is no denying that birth work through the night is hard, but I have the easy job. She is going through a monumental transition in a small window of the world. When the sun rises across the city and the new baby is born, it’s one of the most beautiful views 💜
