🎠On 30th April 1994, a seven-minute interval performance at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin changed Irish dance forever.
Riverdance - composed by Bill Whelan and produced by Moya Doherty and John McColgan - brought Irish step dancing onto a global stage. Led originally by Michael Flatley and Jean Butler, it combined traditional rhythms with large-scale theatrical performance.
The full show premiered in Dublin the following year and quickly became one of Ireland’s most successful cultural exports. Dance schools expanded worldwide, and for many in the diaspora, Riverdance became a powerful symbol of modern Irish identity and confidence.
More than 30 years later, the sound of synchronised hard shoes is still instantly recognisable.
