Muzzleloader season is Saturday. Blackhorn is sky high and primers are scarce. Many are still holding a buck tag, but the weather has grown cold. Most are burned out and have put deer season to bed. Get you gear ready for colder weather, get your loader lined out and hunt evening food sources. Don’t give up, this still may be your year to bag Daddy Long Tines!!

The Superhero got to have a solo hunt for the first time. He has turned into quite the hunter over the last few seasons. At 15, Dad loosened the reins and wanted to see what he could do on his own Superhero and his 308 Wi******er are doing just fine, thank you very much! 🦌

FIRST DEER ALERT!!! Jace Jobe is officially part of the WDL!!
His cousin, C**ton, had the good fortune of taking a buck this season and even though Jace was happy for him, it lit a fuse. Nothing gets a hunter out in the woods quicker than hearing their buddy scored on a buck.
Papaw Bernard decided to let him get out in the woods and see if he had what it takes. Jace is a competitor. He is up for any challenge and was super stoked for this one. He hunted with a CVA Scout 350 Legend, which is a pretty great deer cartridge. He didn’t have to hunt very long as his Papaw spotted a buck coming their way early in the hunt. At 60 yards Bernard stopped the buck and as always, Jace was clutch. He put the crosshair on the vitals and let the Scout bark. The buck didn’t go far, but the adrenaline dump, the accompanying shakes and the emotions all came crashing in. It was a pretty special morning for Jace and his Papaw. One they will never forget. Congratulations Jace!! You are hooked now, my friend. 🦌

Three generations of Milliners had a hunt this weekend. Shiloh, Josh, his son and C**ton, his grandson all hunted together with hopes of C**t getting to bust one with the CVA Cascade 308 Wi******er. Shiloh was on doe patrol while Josh was coaching C**t up. The morning had some nice weather. It was a great day to hunt, except for the fact that Shiloh and C**t were coughing up a storm. It was so bad that Josh would grunt and snort wheeze to hide the commotion they were making! The morning got exciting real quick. Pap (Shiloh) spotted a buck about 100 yards out. C**t got him in the scope and the buck came in like he was tied to a wire. At 15 yards, C**t was ready. Josh stopped him with a brrrrp and C**t put one through the pumping station. 40 yards later, he piled up and the crew was pumped. There may have been some tears, but it was probably just allergies. They decided to hunt a bit more for Pap. A doe was spotted by Josh on top of the ridge about 40 minutes later, but the swirling winds had her spooked. She walked away and out of their lives. Yeah right!! Pap wouldn't allow that to happen. He grabbed his 7MM PRC and after Josh was able to stop her, Pap gave her a free handed neck missile from 100+ yards. It was a great morning, but with two deer down, their day had just begun. Great shooting, fellas. Great hunt all the way around.🦌

Deer hunting is usually a very solitary sport. 25 ft up a tree, just you, your thoughts, and 5 Little Debbie wrappers in your pocket from your midday snacks that didn't make it to 8:30. It doesn't have to be that way. You will always eat your snacks way too early, but why would you hunt by yourself all the time? Some of my best hunts were tandem hunts and I wasn't the primary shooter. Sharing the good times in the woods with friends and family beats the heck out of crusty stories that are probably 1/2 of the truth!
This bring us to the Hubert Clan. This particular hunt included Alexavier the Superhero, Triggerstick, the most rabid hunter I know and his Dad, HotRod Hubert. They set up in a blind opening morning with Dad doing the videoing/coaching, Superhero on doe watch, and Trigger getting antler duty. It was warm and breezy with little happening until about 9:00am. A doe slid in and Superhero was ready, but the doe laid down not presenting a shot. He and Trigger switched chairs to see if he could slide one through if she happened to stand back up. HotRod grunted loudly to get her to pop back up, to no avail, but in doing so, a loud snap of a stick behind them got everyone's attention. "Big buck" HotRod whispered. The buck caught movement in the blind. As Trigger tried to get into position, he tripped, sending the buck bounding away. HotRod let out a loud Mrrrrrppp! The buck stopped, Trigger let the 350 Legend bark, 20 yards later, the beast lay silent, but the blind was rockin!!! That's the beauty of it, Trigger did slay the buck, but that is a hunt that everyone in the blind had a part in the success. That memory they will share and relive many times for the rest of their days. Make hunting social, it doesn't have to be who got the biggest, make it who had more fun! Let me tell you, there is no one happier about this hunt than Triggerstick. He is God, Family, Hunting in that order. I bet Eli, his firecracker of a son, is going to love hearing about this epic hunt in years to come.🦌

Madison Milliner strikes again! After taking a good buck last year, she comes back in 2025 and bags this giant!!
Maddie and her father had to go to a graduation for her sister Autumn Saturday so opening day was out for them. Sunday morning was much better weather, though it was still blowing 10-15 mph but in a good direction for their set up. They saw a good 8 which Maddie passed on, waiting for something a bit bigger. Little did she know it would pay off big time! They saw a doe and a buck down in some thick underbrush at the bottom of the hill but they never presented themselves. About 10:15 Tim spotted a white rack headed their way and it was a bona fide shooter. As he came in, Maddie struggled to get a bead on him through all the limbs and undergrowth. The buck turned and started to walk out of their life as Tim tried desperately to film and help Maddie stop him. Tim finally got him to stop and Maddie let the 44 Mag CVA Scout do the dirty work. She dropped him like a bag of hammers! Daddy daughter hunt for the ages. They made it happen together. Big shoutout to Timbo for giving up his opening weekend to take his daughter hunting. That’s who he is. The ultimate girl Dad.
Great job, Maddie Tat!! You know how to bring them home, young lady. Now get back down to 1819, I need an ice cream cone.

If you are lucky enough to score on opening morning, I hope you have a crew like this to help drag. This was from a previous hunt where I had taken a decently heavy 10 point down in the hills. A mile back through rugged terrain that four wheelers dare not tread. These guys, everyone of them my nephew, took turns dragging for hours until the job was done. Great deer hunting memory…….at least for me. 😃. Do you dread the drag or is it just part of the hunt that makes it complete?
