From a tiny aerobics room to 26 years later…

Brandon Johnson found this newspaper clipping from January 2000, and it brought back a flood of memories.

Before there was Elite Athletics, there was Exercise Elite. John and I had just opened our fitness center in this location, and one of the programs we offered was tumbling classes by Premier Cheerleading out of Knoxville.

What happened next changed the course of my life.

After a period of time, Premier decided that LaFollette wasn’t the right fit for them and moved their program back to Knoxville. Before they left, they encouraged me to keep something going for the kids here who couldn’t make that drive.

And that’s how Elite was born.

I laugh now and say I’m not always sure whether I should give those folks a big hug and thank them or call them a few names—it just depends on the day! Thanks Holly & Shannon! But the truth is, without that push, Elite Athletics might never have existed.

What started as a handful of athletes in an aerobics room has grown into something I never could have imagined. Thousands of athletes have walked through our doors. Lifelong friendships have been formed. Championships have been won. More importantly, confidence has been built, lessons have been learned, and memories have been made.

Through it all, one thing has remained the same: my love for these kids and this community.

When I started, I already had years of cheer and dance experience, and Mr. John had hair (maybe we should frame this as proof). Today, after more than four decades in the sport (and we’re not discussing exactly how many decades), I still love walking into the gym every day. The athletes have changed, the uniforms have changed, and the sport has changed—but my passion for helping young people grow has never changed.

Thank you to every athlete, parent, coach, and supporter who has been part of this journey. Thank you for trusting us with your children and for allowing Elite to be part of your family’s story.

Who would have thought that a little newspaper article from 2000 would be the beginning of something that’s still going strong in 2026?

A sweet trip down memory lane!

A friend recently sent us this newspaper clipping from the LaFollette Press featuring one of Elite Athletics' very first competitive cheer teams as they competed for the 2001-2002 season. Looking at this picture brings back so many wonderful memories and reminds us just how far we've come.

Some of these little cuties helped build the foundation of what Elite Athletics is today. Back then, we had one competitive team with just 12 athletes. Fast forward to 2026, and we're proud to have grown into four competitive teams, a Rec/Expo team, and more than 60 athletes representing our community.

For over 25 years, our mission has never changed. We love this community. We love these kids. And we love the sport of cheerleading. We've been blessed to watch generations of athletes grow—not just as cheerleaders, but as confident, hardworking young people. Many of our former athletes are now parents bringing their own children through our doors, and that's something we'll never take for granted.

We are excited to have Mr. John back in the gym every day, pouring his heart into our athletes and putting his personal training and strength-conditioning background to work helping them become stronger, safer, and more successful.

And for those who occasionally ask—yes, Coach Amy is still here too! After earning a degree in education, I quickly realized that my classroom was a little different than most. My heart has always been in the gym, working with children, helping them build confidence, learn life lessons, and discover what they're capable of achieving. When Elite began, I brought over 15 years of cheer and dance experience to the table. Today, that number has grown to more than 40 years... but let's not focus on my age! 😊 The passion, however, is exactly the same. I still love these kids with my whole heart and consider it a privilege to be part of their lives.

As we celebrate where we've been, we're even more excited about where we're headed. We're getting ready to kick off another season with summer open gyms and July tryouts, and we can't wait to welcome new athletes into the Elite family.

Thank you to every athlete, parent, coach, supporter, and friend who has been part of this journey. Whether you were with us in 2001 or just joined us this year, you are part of the Elite story.

Here's to the memories we've made and the many more still to come!

Our first Open Gym is tonight before placements in July.

This is a great opportunity for your athlete to get extra gym time, meet our coaching staff, and experience the positive atmosphere that makes Elite Athletics special. Parents will also have the chance to connect with current families and hear firsthand what keeps them coming back year after year.
