At our current location and operating setup, providing class coverage can be challenging. Because the facility is not our own, covering a class requires significant setup and teardown, making it difficult to simply plug someone in at the last minute.

Please remember that when you support Gem State Jiu Jitsu, you’re supporting a family business that values quality instruction above all else. We will never fill a coaching role based solely on someone’s belt rank or skill level on the mats. Any class coverage will always come from coaches who are trusted, vetted, passionate, and aligned with our values.

The good news is those days of having more coaching flexibility aren’t too far away!

Thank you for your understanding and support. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the mats after we spend a little time frying in the Arizona sun! ☀️

Elliot has been consistently participating in our open mats and he is learning so much.

Today he learned why we pull guard on some folks. 😂

The De La Riva only works if they can keep the structure they need. Strip those away first. 🪓

❌ Posture control grip
❌ Foot on hip
❌ Angle

Once the structure starts collapsing:

💎 Make them carry your weight through the top hook while you pin the bottom leg.
💎 Time the underhook and connect your head to theirs to flatten and pin the shoulders.
💎 From there… get creative 🤸🏻

One important detail: they can still follow and trace movement with the free leg longer than most people expect. If the shoulders stay pinned and the bottom leg is controlled, you’ve got room to move dynamically without losing the position. 🫶

New schedule update starting in June! 💎

The amount of mat time available stays the same, but now we’ll have even more opportunities to collaborate, train, and grow with new teammates until the new building is ready.

This is what a team is all about. 💪🏼

I’m incredibly grateful for the support from and and excited for our students to test their jiu jitsu, exchange ideas, and sharpen each other with more training partners every week.

From day one, my goal has always been growth. Growth for our students, our culture, and the level of jiu jitsu in the room.

The mission remains the same:
Create a place where people can learn, improve, and enjoy the process together.

I’m excited for this next chapter and thankful for everyone continuing to support what we’re building. Stronger together. 👊🏼
