Factual Friday 💜

One of the things I love about the joke board at Hale Makua Wailuku is that it gives us something fun to talk about.

We read the joke, try to figure out the answer, usually have no idea, and then laugh when we finally get it. 😂 It is such a simple thing, but it can be a great conversation starter.

Kūpuna Concierge may include errands, appointment coordination, checking the refrigerator, organizing paperwork, making phone calls or helping with a calendar. But there is another part of this work that matters just as much: showing up as a person.

A conversation. A laugh. Sitting together for a few minutes. Paying attention to what is going on and following through when something needs to be handled.

What can happen in just four hours?

Two years ago, this client won a four-hour A Honu Space organizing session through an Alzheimer’s event. When she recently reached out to use the gift certificate, we were happy to honor it.

In one four-hour session, we were able to sort, group items, create more open floor space, improve access through the home, and begin putting simple systems in place.

Was the entire house finished? No.

But that is not always the goal.

The carload tells the story.

Professional organizing is not just making a space look better.

It is the decisions after the decisions.

On this day, the car was packed with items all going in different directions.

Boxes for Habitat for Humanity.
Papers that needed to be shredded.
Kids’ shoes that had been washed and were headed to Da Slippah Library.
Food items going to Maui Food Bank.
Bird feed going to The Pet Shop.

This is a big part of the work that happens after a home, garage, office, or storage area gets cleared.

It is not just, “take it away.”

It is asking:

Can this be donated?
Does this need to be shredded?
Can this be reused?
Is this still helpful to someone?
Where is the right place for it to go?

Decluttering takes decision-making, time, loading, hauling, drop-offs, and follow-through.

Decluttering with purpose.

During a kitchen clean-out for a family, I came across a large collection of beautiful food storage containers.

They were matching, useful, in great condition, and way too nice to throw away.

Anyone who cooks for other people knows the container struggle. You send someone home with food, they want to return the container, you tell them not to worry about it, and half the time you never see that container again.

So when I saw these, I immediately thought of Jay❣️

Lori prepares and delivers food to people who need support. Having extra reusable containers means she does not have to buy as many disposable ones, and the person receiving the food gets more than just the meal.

They get a nice container they can keep, reuse, or fill with food and pass on to someone else.

That makes sense to me.

One kitchen had more containers than it needed. Lori could put them to work right away.

This is part of what happens behind the scenes with A Honu Space. It is not just clearing things out. It is paying attention, knowing the community, and helping useful items land where they can serve again.
