The Cascades course, located in the southern part of the City of Jackson, is a course that a golfer must play if he or she wants to play one of the best public courses in Michigan. For our golfers convenience, in 2008, state of the art GPS was added to our fleet of carts. Cascades is challenging, long by most standards, and features water and beautiful scenery. The signature hole is # 17, a par four measuring 383 yards from the white tees. A creek runs across the fairway 240 yards out and the approach is played to a severely sloped green guarded by trees and bunkers.

Father, son win Two-Man Golf Championship

Jeff and Jayce Swihart came from behind to win the Two Man Golf Championship today at Cascades Golf Club.
The duo finished the 27-hole tournament at 11 under par.
The format was nine holes of best ball (best score), alternate shots, and finally a scramble. The Swihart’s shot 29 in the scramble on the front nine at Cascades.
They got out of the gate quickly with an eagle on the par 5 first hole and a birdie on the second. The Swiharts birdied five of the last six holes to claim the title in the championship division.
Mike Raymond and John Blasius finished second at 10 under par and three teams tied for third at 9 under par.
Matt Farhat and Brian Carney tied for third and perhaps were the most consistent team on the day with three under par rounds.
Michael Boldt and Mike Kulka and Greg Zeller and Rob Longbrake also tied for third scoring 100 for 27 holes.
Reid Roucher/Devan Neely tied for the title in the first flight with Cheri Tarpley and Ashley Bearden at 110.
More than 100 players competed in the annual event at Cascades.

It is a fun, 27-hole event consisting of a 9 hole scramble, 9 hole best ball, and 9 hole alternate shot. Cost is $85 per player and includes golf, skins, and lunch. Don't forget to register.

Brockie earns first major golf tournament win

Jack Brockie appears to be comfortable being back in the Jackson area.
It showed in his golf game this weekend.
Brockie won his first major golf title in Jackson County shooting 137 – 7 under par – in winning the Jackson County Open at Cascades Golf Course.
The former two-time state champion at Hanover-Horton won the event by three strokes over Cody Lysher (140) and six shots over Steve Maddalena (143).
Brian C**n, Nick Reynolds, and Andrew Boldt finished tied for fourth with even-par 144s for the weekend. C**n shot the lowest round of the day in the championship flight with a 69.
Brockie helped Hanover-Horton win the state team golf title in Division 3 in 2018 and was an individual state champion in 2019. His high school career was cut short as MHSAA sports were canceled in 2020 due to Covid.
He spent two years playing golf at Trine University before taking a year off. Brockie went to Grand Valley State University and graduated from UT Southern near Nashville.
“I played a lot of great courses at UT,” Brockie said. “It made me a lot better (golfer) playing down there.”
The college graduate kept it simple this weekend on the golf course.
“It was a matter of not overthinking things … see the shot and hit the shot,” Brockie said. “I know what I can do.”
Lysher cut the lead to one stroke after shooting a 2-under-par 35 on the front nine. Brockie birdied 10 and a double bogey by Lysher on hole No. 14 gave him some breathing room.
Lysher finished the day with an even-par 72 and a second-place finish. Brockie finished at 137 – one stroke off the tournament record.
Nick Henman won the first flight with a two-day total of 147. He shot a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday. Kyle Bowler was second (151) and Andy Horodecki placed third (152).
Charlie Hagle won the second flight with a total of 159 and Jameson Vinson was second with 161 for two days.

Tarpley wins first County Senior Open

Like a bottle of fine w**e Jackson area golfer John Tarpley gets better with age.
Tarpley held off Todd Marston and Steve Maddalena to win the Jackson County Senior Open Sunday at Cascades Golf Course.
He finished the tournament with a pair of 72s – even par 144 – while Marston and Maddalena tied for second at 145.
It is the first senior win for Tarpley – who won the Lyle Ambs Memorial Golf Tournament in 2023.
“I was nervous the whole way around,” Tarpley said of his round. “I think I was nervous when I woke up this morning.”
It didn’t show that he was nervous as he birdied two of his first four holes to forge into the lead.
Tarpley had nine consecutive pars before back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15.
He parred 18 and had to watch as Maddalena and Marston had birdie putts to possibly tie.
“I am getting more comfortable with my game,” Tarpley said of his recent success. “My short game is better.”
Nate Lazebnik won the 60-69 year-old division with a two-day total of 149. David McDevitt, Robert Varner, and Mike Keene tied for second with 154.
Dave Calderone won the 70-plus division scoring 150 for 36 holes. Roger Kuhl was second (153) and Dave Clark was third (154).
