โLet me be absolutely clear โ Iโve been around this league long enough to see every trick, every cheap tactic, and every desperate move a team can resort to. But I have never witnessed anything as reckless, as one-sided, and as openly tolerated as what happened on that court today.
When a player is genuinely making a play on the ball, everyone can see it. But when a player completely abandons the play and, out of frustration, lunges at an opponent, that is no longer just incidental contact during competition โ that is intentional. That contact was deliberate. Completely deliberate. And pretending otherwise only insults everyone who watched what happened.
We all saw what came next โ the taunting, the smirks, the over-the-top celebrations, as if they had just created some kind of masterpiece instead of delivering a cheap shot right in front of the crowd. That alone said a great deal about how they conducted themselves on the court today.
I donโt need to name names โ everyone knows exactly who Iโm talking about. But I will speak directly to the WNBA and the officiating crew: these increasingly blurred lines, these late and questionable whistles, and this growing tolerance for undisciplined and dangerous play โ donโt think people arenโt noticing. We saw it. And the fans watching this game saw it too.
You constantly talk about player safety, fairness, and sportsmanship. Those words are repeated over and over during games and broadcasts. Yet game after game, dirty plays are excused as simply being โphysical,โ as if giving them a nicer label somehow makes them acceptable. If this is what the WNBA now calls sportsmanship, then the values this league claims to uphold are becoming hollow.
Iโm not going to stand here and politely nod while my Indiana Fever players โ women who compete hard, play with discipline, and do everything they can to maintain their composure even when the game becomes heated โ are put at a disadvantage by decisions that arenโt enforced consistently and appear to favor the Chicago Sky.
Today, the Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky 90โ86, and I โ Head Coach Stephanie White โ could not be prouder of the way this team competed, maintained its composure, and fought through adversity. But letโs be clear: this victory does not erase the frustration left by the way certain moments of this game were officiated.
Iโm not saying this out of bitterness โ emotions fade. Iโm saying it because I care about the integrity of this sport. And if the WNBA doesnโt take meaningful steps to protect its players, then the women giving everything they have on that court will continue to pay the price โ week after week, game after game, possession after possession.โ
