They were told to lick the brush. It was radioactive.

In 1917, young women in Orange, New Jersey took jobs painting glowing radium numbers on watch dials. Supervisors taught them to shape their brushes with their lips: “Lip, dip, paint.” They were told the paint was harmless.

Years later, their teeth fell out. Their bones broke. Their jaws crumbled. When a doctor found the factory was contaminated, the company altered his report.

By 1927, more than 50 women had died.

In 1928, Grace Fryer and four other women took the company to court and won a settlement. Their fight helped establish workers’ right to sue for harm on the job. History remembers them as the Radium Girls.

Today, OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard gives every worker the right to know what they work with, through labels, Safety Data Sheets and training.

51 men climbed the tower that morning. None came down.

On April 27, 1978, workers were building a cooling tower at the Pleasants Power Station in Willow Island, West Virginia. The project was behind schedule. Their scaffold was bolted to concrete that hadn’t cured long enough.

The concrete gave way. The scaffold fell. All 51 workers on it were killed.

OSHA cited the contractors for 20 violations. The case settled for $85,500, about $1,700 for each life lost.

It’s thought to be the deadliest construction accident in U.S. history, and most people have never heard of it.

Today, OSHA requires scaffolds to support at least four times their maximum intended load and to be inspected by a competent person before every shift. No schedule is worth a life.

Tesla’s new Roadster flew over a Cybertruck last week, and the internet hasn’t stopped talking about it.

Our character Greenman had a different takeaway: if a car can fly, he can reach anything. So he raised a tall metal ladder straight up, right under a set of power lines.

It’s a joke, but the mistake is real. Ladder contact with overhead lines is one of the most common electrical hazards on job sites.

A few rules every crew should know:

Stay at least 10 feet from overhead power lines
Electricity can arc, so the ladder doesn’t have to touch the line
Treat every line as live
Use fiberglass ladders near electrical work
Look up before raising a ladder or long tool

We made this into a short Breaking Good episode, because crews remember stories better than slides.

In 1930, thousands of men took a job digging a tunnel through a West Virginia mountain.

The rock was almost pure silica. To work faster, they drilled dry, with no water and no masks.

Silica dust scars the lungs. The company admitted 109 deaths. Historians estimate the real number was 764 or more.

It’s called the Hawks Nest Tunnel disaster, and it remains one of the worst industrial disasters in American history.

Today, OSHA’s silica standard requires dust controls and respiratory protection, because no job is worth your lungs.

In 1936, Al Zampa slipped from the Golden Gate Bridge.

He survived. A safety net caught him.

That same net saved 18 more workers. Together they became known as the Half Way to Hell Club.

Nearly 90 years later, the lesson hasn’t changed: fall protection saves lives.

Today, OSHA requires fall protection at 6 feet on construction sites. Guardrails, harnesses and safety nets aren’t extra steps. They’re the reason workers go home.

Greenman thinks it’s “just dust.” 😅

Cutting, grinding or drilling concrete, stone and brick releases silica dust, so fine you can breathe it in without even seeing it. Over time it can cause silicosis, lung cancer and kidney disease.

The fix is simple:

Water to keep the dust down
Dust collection on your tools
Respirators when needed
No dry sweeping or compressed air

Watch the full Breaking Good episode and tag a coworker who cuts concrete without a mask.

Turning off a machine doesn’t remove its energy. Stored electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical energy can still make it move during maintenance.

That’s why OSHA requires a proper Lockout/Tagout process:

Notify affected workers
Shut down and isolate all energy sources
Apply your lock and tag
Release stored energy
Verify the machine won’t start

One rule every worker should know: your lock, your key, only you remove it.

Tag a coworker who works on machines.
