Chain’s eventually wear out. With time, a worn chain will prematurely wear your cassette and chainring(s) causing shifting issues and skipping. Here we have a couple examples of a specific tool showcasing what a new and very worn chain looks like. Notice the tool sits inside the links on the old one (this is worn out).
