What a season for Harbor Light baseball and softball!

Tuesday we celebrated our softball and baseball teams during our spring sports awards banquet. From first pitches to postseason play, each team gave us plenty to celebrate this spring.

A special congratulations to our varsity baseball team on their District Championship season and to all of our athletes who were recognized for their hard work, dedication, and achievement.

We would also like to recognize this year’s Harbor Light Athletes of the Year, Landon Jakeway and Valerie Maghakian.

At Harbor Light, being an athlete is about more than statistics, wins, or awards. It means competing with excellence, leading with character, serving teammates, demonstrating perseverance, and honoring Christ both on and off the field.

Congratulations, Landon and Valerie. Thank you for representing what it means to be a Swordsman athlete.

⚔️ The Good Report ⚔️

The Lady Swordsmen have plenty to be proud of as they wrap up the 2026 season.

Harbor Light opened District play with an impressive 17-7 victory over NMCA. After falling behind by six runs early, the Swordsmen remained calm, trusted one another, and battled all the way back with a dominant offensive performance to earn a spot in the District Championship game.

In the championship matchup against Pellston, Harbor Light once again showed its fight. The Swordsmen took an early 2-0 lead before Pellston used a big fourth inning to gain the advantage. Harbor Light continued to battle throughout the game but ultimately fell 15-8.

Alayna Swadling and Maryah Burns led the offense with two hits each, while Burns and Lydia Goldsborough drove in two runs apiece. Evyn Porta battled through seven innings in the circle, recording six strikeouts.

While the season ended one game short of a district title, a District Championship appearance, a remarkable comeback victory over NMCA, and the growth this team displayed throughout the year are all accomplishments worth celebrating.

💬 “A fantastic way to end the season. We started the first game down six, but we took a deep breath and did what we know to do. I’m super proud of how the team stayed calm, adjusted, and came back strong. The second game we battled hard the entire time. A couple errors let the other team take off on the scoreboard, and in a game that close in competition, that’s all it takes. Overall, we battled hard and should be very proud of the effort we put in and how far we have come this year. I can’t wait for next season to build off this momentum and see how much more we can accomplish. Until then, I look forward to celebrating with this team on our awards night!” — Coach Good

Congratulations on a season filled with growth, grit, perseverance, and teamwork. The future is bright for Lady Swordsmen Softball. ❤️

• Daniel Urman – Three hits, stellar defense, and leadership at the top of the lineup.

Coach’s take:

“These guys have battled through a tough schedule, tough weather, and plenty of challenges this season. Today they played with confidence, energy, and a belief in each other. To win two games the way they did and finish with a shutout in the championship says a lot about this group. We’re thankful for the opportunity to keep playing and excited for what’s ahead.”

Next Stop: Regionals.

🥎 The Good Report 🥎

Game 1
Harbor Light battled hard in a wild back-and-forth matchup before falling to Charlevoix 18-11. The Swordsmen exploded for eight runs in the second inning to grab a 10-4 lead, showing grit, patience, and aggressive base running all night long.

Valerie Maghakian and Marley Kern each drove in two runs, while Lydia Goldsborough swiped two bases. Emily Good and Lilly Cope each worked two walks as Harbor Light continued to pressure the bases throughout the game.

Despite the momentum swings, the girls kept competing with energy and heart until the final out.

Game 2
Harbor Light dropped the nightcap 11-7, but not without another strong fight. Valerie Maghakian delivered an exciting inside-the-park home run in the second inning, driving in two runs before racing home herself on the play to help HLCS reclaim the lead early, while Emily Good and Marley Kern also contributed key hits to keep the Swordsmen offense rolling.

The Swordsmen continued to show patience at the plate with 10 walks and stayed aggressive on the bases with four stolen bags.

🥎 Coach’s Take:
“What an electric night. We went into those two games with great excitement. We knew Charlevoix was good, but we also knew we were there celebrating. Some of the girls knew it was their last game, and all the girls knew it’s coming to an end, so they purposed to have a great mindset and enjoy a good game no matter what battle was ahead.

Charlevoix had a great team. The strike zone was one of the craziest and most inconsistent we’ve faced yet, but the girls kept the fun and energy alive all night. They battled hard both games.

Ending the night with the seniors crossing home plate with their parents was a beautiful moment, and I hope it was meaningful for the parents, seniors, and everyone there.”

⚾️ Swadling’s Seventh Inning Summary ⚾️

Game 1
Harbor Light battled to the very end Friday at Kosequat Park, falling to Harbor Springs 5-4 on a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.

The Swordsmen jumped ahead in the third after RBI swings from Gerrit Boerman and Ayden Burns helped plate three runs. Harbor Springs tied things late in the sixth, but Harbor Light answered again in the seventh when Burns delivered another sacrifice fly to regain the lead at 4-3.

Harbor Springs answered in the bottom half with back-to-back singles to walk it off.

Ayden Burns and Gerrit Boerman each drove in two runs, while CJ DuBois collected two hits. Defensively, the Swordsmen played a clean game without an error, and Jonny Urman led the way with seven defensive plays.

Game 2
The Swordsmen showed grit again in game two, but Harbor Springs rallied back for an 11-6 win after Harbor Light built an early four-run advantage.

Harbor Light exploded for five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Daniel Urman. Harbor Springs answered with a big inning of their own and never fully gave the lead back.

Daniel Urman led the offense with three hits, while Caleb Chamberlin added two hits and strong defensive play.

• Huge congratulations to Daniel Urman on recording his 100th varsity hit!

🥎 The Good Report 🥎

Harbor Light battled hard Friday against Harbor Springs in a tough doubleheader matchup.

Game 1
The Lady Swordsmen out-hit Harbor Springs 7-5 but came up short in a 7-4 loss. Evyn Porta led the way with two hits, while Daphne Dutcher drove in two runs. After a slow start at the plate, Harbor Light found some late-game energy and continued to fight.

Game 2
Harbor Light stayed within striking distance early before Harbor Springs pulled away late for a 12-2 win. Maryah Burns went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while the Lady Swordsmen continued to battle through every inning.

Coach’s Take:
“We always look forward to battling it out with Harbor Springs. Game 1 we played hard on defense and made them earn every run they got, but our bats were cold for most of the game. We finally got warmed up in the batter’s box, but it was too late. We carried that energy into Game 2 and it stayed close until the final inning. Our girls played phenomenal and should be proud of the battle. Now we know what we need to work on as we prepare for districts — but first, one more home game to celebrate our seniors! See you Tuesday at home!”
