Field Report — Hancock Region

It has now rained for what feels like 947 consecutive hours.

The forecast offers no mercy. Only more tiny rain cloud icons stretching endlessly into the future.

We fear the sun may have abandoned Hancock entirely.

The canal swells.
The puddles multiply.
The shop staff stare longingly at bicycles they can no longer ride.

Some say they can still hear the trails calling faintly through the mist…

We remain hopeful.
But morale is low.
We hope to see life soon.

Two trails, one epic journey!

There is something so special about the transition from the rugged Potomac riverside to the mountain crossings of the Alleghenies. Whether you’re doing the full 335-mile trek from DC to Pittsburgh or just a weekend ride, these trails are a local treasure.

Fun Facts:

The Connection: The C&O Canal meets the GAP in Cumberland, MD, creating a continuous off-road trail through the heart of the Appalachians.

The “Big Savage”: On the GAP side, you cross the Eastern Continental Divide which is (thankfully) all downhill to Cumberland or Pittsburgh from there!

The Paw Paw Tunnel: An engineering marvel on the C&O that took 14 years to build. It’s 3,118 feet of hand-laid brick and pure atmosphere.

Who else has “The Full Pull” on their bucket list? 💪
