North Shore Dojo is a school that prides itself on teaching life skills and striving for excellence through personal sacrifice and dedication to the spirit and philosophy of the martial art of Shotokan Karate. As a longstanding member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), Sensei Kohn has garnered firsthand knowledge and experience defining and adapting the training strategies off Olympic-
class athletes into his local dojo. Training the USA National Karate Team at the USOC facilities in Colorado Springs and Lake Placid afforded him the unique advantage of developing regimens that extend far beyond the integration of basic kicks and punches. Within a typical class, students focus on all essential aspects of physical fitness including physical conditioning and strengthening, stretching, endurance building, and the integration of the mind-body interactions. The KARATE CAN-DO PROGRAM offers individuals with a wide range of abilities the opportunity to participate in karate while improving their physical, cognitive, and emotional health. The intention is to provide inclusion and adaptation in a program that is both recreational and competitive in nature. Sensei Kohn, director of the program, has developed progressive methods of teaching karate to children and adults with various disabilities that has garnered attention on a global scale. His classes are unique to the karate world and in most communities because they include individuals with physical, cognitive, developmental, behavior, emotional, sensory and learning challenges. The program is based on the following core values:
Everyone has the ability to learn, the right to participate and compete
