Another successful ARTA youth tournament in the books for Ga***rd tennis on Saturday August 8th. The weather was fantastic and so were these kids and teenagers. Great sportsmanship, tough competition and super crowd support made for a fun day of tennis!
We had 18 youth aged 8 to 18 playing singles and doubles in 3 divisions and 22 total matches later we had some champions and finalists! We had competitors from all over Northern Michigan and even Texas including Charlevoix, Big Rapids, Grayling, Mancelona, Elmira, Ga***rd & Dallas, TX. So many great players put in a lot of hard work and it's definitely paying off. Thanks to all the players and families that joined and continue to support the lifelong sport of tennis. I wish all the kids could win that trophy, but I was proud of everyone for joining and giving it their all!
Thank you for the support and it was great meeting you all! See you at next year's tournament!

The "Moxie" women's doubles tennis tournament took place Saturday, July 25th 2026 at the Otsego County Sportsplex tennis courts. Last year's champions were unable to team up this time around, which meant 1 of the 8 teams would be lifting the ARTA Champions cup for their first time!
The tournament format was fast-four with a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a 3rd set. This meant strong starts were imperative and of course no team wants to lose in the first round. Despite the nerves, 4 teams came out victorious including the team of Lindsay Dawe/ Rachel Chapko(4-2, 4-2), Dana Hall/ Anjuli Hawkins(4-1, 4-0) and the two mother/ daughter teams of Brooke & Lili Fenske(4-2, 4-0) and MaryAnn Henion and Annie Henion(4-1, 4-2).

The losing teams would go onto compete in the consolation to determine 3rd and 4th place. The teams of Sheila Simpson/ Michelle Sullivan, Sue Dieters/ Betsy Brooks, Judy Potter/ Sami Burns & Kristen Bunte/ Mary Tithof entered the consolation bracket but were determined to press on for the 3rd place title!
The semifinals were exciting as mother/ daughter duo Fenske/ Fenske dispatched their opponents 4-0, 4-0 placing them quickly into the finals! On the other side of the draw, the other mother/ daughter team Henion/ Henion were battling against the strong team of Dana Hall/ Anjuli Hawkins. In the end, Hall/ Hawkins were able to defeat the Henions in a 10-point super-tiebreaker with a final score line of 3-5, 4-0, 10-3. The Henions were also able to go onto win the consolation finals against Dawe/ Chapko with a scoreline of 4-2, 5-4(7-5)! This was a thoroughly entertaining match and MaryAnn & Annie Henion won 3rd place, but also win the award for most time on court with several long matches!

In the "Moxie" finals, the crowd was in store for a blockbuster match with a normal 6-game format that ultimately went the distance to a super tiebreaker again! After losing the first set 3-6, Brooke & Lili Fenske were able to rally in the 2nd set to force a set tiebreaker which they won 7-3 to force the super tiebreaker. In a nail-biting ending, the team of Hall/ Hawkins were able to save match point at 8-9 only to face another match point at 9-10. Team Fenske this time wouldn't let it slip away and won the match with a scoreline of 3-6, 7-6(7-3) 11-9. Great tennis played by both teams, incredible grit and determination by Brooke and Lili Fenske and in the end all teams shook hands with mutual respect for the maximum effort given by all players.

So much fun tennis, great points played and another successful tournament for the Alpine Regional Tennis Association in the books. See you ladies again next year!

The 6th annual "Roper" men's doubles tennis tournament took place Saturday June 27th, 2026 under sunny skies and perfect summer weather in Ga***rd, MI. Players from all over Michigan, including several from Ga***rd, Charlevoix, Lewiston, Frederic, Mancelona, Grayling, Grand Rapids and 1 player from Florida teamed up to make the 8 teams vying for the coveted ARTA trophy!
The top seeded team of Kyte Hawkins and Isaiah Fay started off strong with 4-0, 4-0 victory against veteran Ga***rd locals Charlie Simpson and Dave George. They went on to beat the team of Mike Ziska and Christopher Roper in the 2nd round winning 4-0, 4-2 putting them in the finals. Ziska/ Roper beat the father son team of Jason & Nolan Rallis in the first round and the crowd was thoroughly entertained by this match. So many fun points! On the other side of the bracket, the team of Dan Hawkins & Hank Milius were able to beat the team of Glen Renaud & TJ Dwyer(from Florida) 4-1, 4-0. In their 2nd round they faced and defeated Rod Regan & Vinnie Tithof 4-2, 4-1 putting them in the finals as well. The finals featured some great shot making from both teams but in the end the team of Kyte Hawkins and Isaiah Fay were able to prevail winning 4-0, 4-0 and only losing 2 games the entire tournament. Congrats and well played guys, and enjoy your prizes!
The consolation bracket was also played out and in the end the team of Mike Ziska & Christopher Roper won against Blake Blanchet and Bert Kaiser 8-2. Christopher Roper is the son of Mike Roper who this tournament is named after. Mike Roper was a great person who loved tennis and loved having fun. Having his son join the tournament with other family members in attendance made the event that much more special!
So much fun tennis, great points played and another successful tournament for the Alpine Regional Tennis Association in the books. See you guys again next year! 😄
