Four years ago I sat down with the intention of creating a Hellgrammite pattern that looked realistic and was fairly easy to tie. I specifically wanted something that looked articulated without the need to use multiple shanks to achieve that goal. It took a couple of years to find the right combination of materials, but once I settled on a design I decided to submit it. I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from Rainy's Premium Flies saying they were ready to move forward with the Ozark Hellgrammite. Can’t wait to see it in next month’s catalog. Shown here tied on an Ahrex Anadromous Nymph hook. I have high hopes that my fellow smallmouth nymphers will find great success with this pattern.

We started the day as strangers and ended the day as friends. These fellas were a blast. They were fun, laid back, funny, and overall just great people. They both also happen to be excellent fly fishermen. It’s no surprise with the skills they brought to the table that they had a very successful day. I love meeting new people who share the same passion! I have three more trips before I close the door on my first official season of guiding. Looking forward to cooking, fishing, laughing, and hanging out with many more in the future. Thanks for a great day on the water guys!

Small creek fishing gets tough this time of year for both the angler and the fish. Bring them in quickly. If you are going to take pictures bring a net so the fish can stay in the water while you’re digging for your phone. When it’s hot and the water is low they are in survival mode. Take a photo while it’s under water or lift them out just as you snap the pic and send them home. We spent some time in the southern most part of the Smallmouth’s range yesterday and were rewarded with a few. We saw several healthy fish, but it turns out they could see us too.

After many years in the making, I am super excited to announce the official launch of Ozark Mountain Fly L.L.C. I have devoted the past 27 years to studying, learning, and fishing for Smallmouth Bass in the rivers and streams of the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Throughout that time I have been blessed with great mentors who have graciously helped me along the way, and I continue to learn from some of the best in the business.

I am a licensed public school teacher in the state of Arkansas and have been for the past 18 years. Being a teacher has allowed me the opportunity to spend not only weekends, but also the end of May, all of June, July, and the first part of August on the water getting to know the streams I fish intimately. My educational background allows me to systematically assess the skills my clients currently possess, meet them where they are, and provide meaningful instruction in a way they can retain, allowing those who fish with me to continue creating memorable experiences with friends and family in the future.

I have also spent many years hiking, backpacking, and doing overnight float trips on these special waters that we are so fortunate to have in our part of the country. Whether it’s floating, wading, camping, or a day trip, I have the knowledge and the gear to make it happen. I’m more than excited to combine my educational background with my passion for the outdoors to create an unforgettable experience on the water.

While there is no substitute for a full-time guide who spends every day on the water, I would venture to say that most full-time guides start out as part-time guides. I had my first booking six years ago, and I look forward to continuing to develop those relationships until I retire from teaching. My hope is to build my business in such a way that, when I’m ready to retire from teaching I can transition from the classroom to being on the water full-time until I’m ready to fully retire.

Yesterday was a very special day for Kyle Barton and his son. The combination of overcast skies and an extreme temperature drop after multiple hot days in a row had everything out cruising and feeding all day long. We found them on the near and far slopes in deep, moving water, in the current seams, and on shallow flats below the deep holes. It was a day to be on the water!

Kyle caught several great fish, but it was far more important to him for Charlie to have a great day, and that he did! This fishy 8 year old caught his two personal best. Watching them interact with each other throughout the day and having a front-row seat to what will become core memories for both of them is something I don’t take for granted.

Days like this help ensure that the next generation continues to love and appreciate these wild places as much as we do. Thank you guys for allowing me to be a part of your day!

These two love birds drove all the way from Texas to Arkansas to catch Neosho Bass. They travel all over the country together targeting different species of trout, bass, and sunfish. In my opinion, fly fishing is a wonderful way to spend time with your spouse. I’m thankful they chose to come down and fish with me. Aside from being excellent anglers, they are both fantastic human beings. Thanks for a great day on the water!

What a week-end! I want to say a huge thank you to Tillman Pittman and the Arkansas Fly Fishers for inviting me to Little Rock to do a fly-tying clinic and give my presentation on Locating and Catching Smallmouth Bass in the Ozarks and Ouachitas. It was encouraging to see a thriving fly-fishing club when so many others in our area have had to close their doors because of dwindling participation. They also set me up with John Pineda for a guided fishing trip in the Ouachitas. It was great to explore a beautiful new creek and meet new people who share the same passion!
