I was in thick twisted up timber timber with a creek running through it behind agriculture where animals are focussed right now. I haven’t heard any elk talking but have spent the mornings walking and calf calling occasionally and then giving a light chuckle and a simple bugle.
We found fresh sign and tracks all morning. Elk Are Here! So about 1pm when the wind had kicked up enough to cover some sound we went on a still hunt. Slow and quiet. I walked 250 steps then would calf call and sneak another 250 steps then chuckle. At 1;45 pm a bull ripped back at us so I mimicked him. Then flanked us 180 degrees without us hearing him move and started raking. I immediately started raking as well. He squealed and I mocked him instantly. Then he came right in through the thick. Checkmate- It’s crazy to bugle in bulls in August but it’s doable. Me and my brother Dusty Fillion continue the success streak! Feels good to have all the summer prep come in clutch on an opener opportunity.
