After 28 years of coaching baseball, Hans Anderson has learned that some of the game’s greatest lessons come from failure.

“It’s okay for you and the kids to fail, as that is how you learn and grow as a player and person.”

From tee-ball to high school baseball, Hans has focused on developing more than great players. His goal is to help build great teammates, leaders, and individuals both on and off the field.

This summer brought another memorable chapter as Hans coached both the 13U Valley Service Mechanical and 13U Fargo Little League teams, helping Fargo LL make an incredible run to a top-three finish in the U.S. Division at the 2026 Intermediate 50/70 Baseball World Series.

After four years of coaching, including this past summer with the 14U Fargo 61’s Red, Riley Pesek has built his approach around two things every player can control: attitude and effort.

From giving players opportunities to work through challenges to making sure everyone has a role on the team, Riley strives to help young athletes grow as players, teammates and young men — while never losing sight of why they started playing in the first place: to have fun.

Now entering his senior year at North Dakota State University, Riley hopes to continue working with young people as an elementary physical education teacher.

For Scott Mortenson, coaching has always centered around three things:

Attitude. Effort. Fun.

After 14 years of coaching from the youth to collegiate level, Scott brought that philosophy to the 13U Fargo 61’s Blue team this past summer.

For Scott, the most meaningful moments aren’t championships or big wins. They’re reconnecting with former players years later and seeing the people they’ve become.

For the past five years, Greg Gilbertson has had the opportunity to coach his son and watch his players grow—not only as athletes, but as young people.

His approach is simple: understand that every player is different, give them the confidence to try new things, build a strong team culture, and never forget that baseball is supposed to be fun.

And when a little extra motivation is needed? A piece of Double Bubble can go a long way.

Greg’s advice to fellow coaches sums it up best:

“Be prepared, be fair, be patient, and have fun.”

For Ann Kallod, some of the most meaningful moments in coaching have nothing to do with the final score.

They’re found in teammates encouraging one another after a tough play, celebrating someone else’s success, and learning how to handle both the highs and lows of competition together.

Ann believes youth sports provide countless opportunities to build character, strengthen relationships, and teach young athletes what it means to be a great teammate. And sometimes, the impact of those lessons shows up years later with two simple words: “Hey, Coach!”
