I have told a few people off this sad news but I wanted to share with everyone. If you haven’t heard this story, a STMA hockey coach caught a groove in the ice a few weeks ago during a PeeWee practice. He fell straight back and before he hit his head on the ice his helmet flew off his head. He was unconscious and taken to the hospital. He spent weeks in the ICU before going into a TBI rehab facility. He passed away yesterday due to complications from his fall.
My nephew skated for this coach when he was in the program. He along with others shared how much Harv meant to them and how much he taught them.
The thing about this tragic accident is that it could have been prevented. His helmet flew off his head as he fell, and like so many coaches this happened because his chin strap wasn’t snapped.
It’s easy to do but still so many coaches and older players aren’t taking the precautions to be safe on the ice. The coaches did snap their helmets today (well those that had functioning straps- yep some straps were broken because they don’t need them 😬) but let’s tell the boys to remind their coaches to buckle up.
A local hockey coach has died after he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a fall during practice last month, family confirmed.
