Some of you may remember the one and only Dunzilla ("Dunny"), our 2009 Appaloosa gelding out of the incredible broodmare No Zip No Mail ("Emily"), who is currently enjoying retirement exactly as she deserves: surrounded by friends, love, snacks, and very few responsibilities.

Dunny has always been special. Not because of his show record—although that's certainly impressive—but because he's the complete package: smart, kind, handsome, funny, and endlessly enjoyable to be around. The ribbons and titles were just the paperwork.

The photo on the left was taken in 2011, just three short months before he left Minnesota for what would become his forever home in Warren, Maine.

The photo on the right was taken recently.

Same horse.
Same kind eye.
A lot more freckles.

It's hard to believe how much his color has changed over the years, but one thing hasn't changed at all: he's still living his best life.

Seeing horses thrive long after the show pen is one of the greatest rewards of breeding and raising them. The trophies eventually collect dust. Knowing they're loved, valued, and cherished for a lifetime never does.

A huge thank you to Tozia and Alvin Chase for giving Dunny—and his brothers Bert and Elvis—such an exceptional life. We couldn't have asked for a better home.

❤️ Some horses win championships.
The really lucky ones win families.

Originally scheduled to take effect on February 1, 2026, key amendments of the USDA APHIS Horse Protection Act have now been postponed until December 31, 2026.

Although the HPA has historically been associated with the Tennessee Walking Horse industry, this delay–and the broader regulatory debate surrounding it–has implications for all horse breeds and disciplines.

Some birthdays are parties.
Some become something much bigger. 🐴❤️

This past week, we had the privilege of helping celebrate the birthday of a very special horse-loving woman alongside her sisters, caregivers, and family. What unfolded here at Grace and Grit was one of those beautiful reminders of why this program exists in the first place.

There were rides, grooming sessions, affectionate “helpfulness” from Rocket, Corkscrew, and Dolly, laughter, curiosity, meaningful connection, and many quiet moments that somehow said just as much as the big ones.

One of the things that makes Grace and Grit: Health and Healing Thru Horse-Human Partnerships different is that we understand that horses don't exist simply to make people feel good. We believe in building thoughtful partnerships with them — partnerships where the wellbeing of everyone involved matters, including the horses, the humans, the helpers, and even the observers standing quietly nearby taking it all in.

Because this was our idea, it’s our responsibility to create an environment where everyone can feel safe, successful, understood, and valued. The horses don’t owe us participation, affection, patience, or trust. Those things are earned.

And when people slow down enough to truly listen, observe, communicate clearly, and consider the needs of another living being, something remarkable happens: the horses become softer, more confident, more expressive, and more connected…and so do the people.

That’s the kind of healing and learning we care about here. Not manufactured moments, but authentic relationships that improve life for horses and humans alike.

We are deeply grateful to this wonderful family for spending the day with us and for giving us the opportunity to continue creating experiences that honor both the horses and the humans who love them.

And judging by the response of the horses, we’re certain they believe the entire event should become a weekly tradition. 😊
