Huge Shoutout to Shimotsu Elementary! ♟️💪

These young chess players competed up in the Middle School division at the 2026 Middle School National Chess Tournament in Round Rock, TX — and held their own against older competition.

Team finishes:

🥇 7th place overall – Under 1100
🥈 13th place – Under 900
🥉 15th place – Under 700

A special shoutout to Jeremiah, who put up an incredible 5.5 out of 7 — finishing 14th overall in the U1100 section (tied for 8th)! 👏

And another huge shoutout to Seung Hun Yu — scoring 5 points in the U700 section in his first year of chess! What an amazing debut on a national stage. 🌟

This kind of performance shows great discipline and preparation under the outstanding tutelage of FM Roberto Miramontes and CM Anthony Guerra.

Making the Dark Knights and Sharyland ISD proud! So proud of this group for playing up, battling hard, and representing Hidalgo County with class. The future is bright for these elementary standouts.

Orlando Falcon what an incredible run! ♟️🔥

At the 2026 Middle School National Chess Tournament in Round Rock, TX, Orlando finished UNDEFEATED with 5 wins and 2 draws, securing 2nd place in the Under 1700 section.

No losses. Just guts, focus, and great endgame play in round 7. 👏

Way to represent Hidalgo County and make everyone back home proud! This is huge for our community.

So proud of you, Orlando. Keep aiming high!

Congratulations to Anthony Guerra on earning the title of National Tournament Director! ♟️🏆

This is a major accomplishment and reflects the countless hours he has dedicated to organizing, directing, and growing chess in Texas and beyond. Anthony has played a key role in many large events and continues helping raise the standard for tournament organization in our state.

Region X, the largest chess region in Texas, now has an active National Tournament Director in the Rio Grande Valley. This is a great accomplishment for South Texas chess and for the RGV chess community as a whole.

Congratulations again, Anthony. Well deserved.
