Great Bay Rowing

Great Bay Rowing is a non-profit community club, providing access to rowing on the seacoast. In 2003 Great Bay Rowing Club purchased a fleet of boats.

Great Bay Rowing was founded in 1996 by Sean O’Connell in an effort to address a growing interest in rowing in the Seacoast region of New Hampshire, and as a means of giving back to the community what he had enjoyed as a high school rower on the Oyster River. The club primarily operates out of a boathouses located on the Cocheco River in Dover NH, while occasionally running programs out of Jackson

’s Landing in Durham NH. Great Bay Rowing shares these locations with the University of New Hampshire. The Jackson’s Landing boathouses exists under a unique arrangement with UNH and the town which requires that a portion of the boathouse be set aside for use by community members, resulting in the boathouse we use today. Prior to this GBR rented the equipment used. This was a milestone in the club’s evolution. GBR, a young and growing club, had already met with great competitive successes. Both the junior and master teams have won medals at regional regattas. Club teams have had the privilege of competing in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta, Masters National and Masters World competitions. Several GBR juniors rowers have gone on to take prominent positions on their college rowing teams. Fun events, both rowing and non-rowing related, have become traditional aspects of the GBR experience. The club continues to look towards competitive success, but also hopes to continue to draw a large recreational constituency of both sweep and sculling rowers.

Thank you to all of the high school and masters athletes who came to our boat cleaning party this morning! We got everything squeaky clean and ready to row for Monday, when the high school squads begin their fall season.
Want to be a part of this great community? We still are accepting registrations for our fall middle school and adult learn to row programs. We will also continue to accept athletes to the high school novice team until Friday! Check out the Great Bay Rowing website for full details.

Calling all students in grades 6-8 📢
Try rowing this fall! Our middle school program meets two afternoons a week through September and October, providing a great introduction to both rowing and becoming an all around athlete. You don't need any experience to join, we will teach you everything you need to know.

Just over a week since the high school competitive team returned from racing at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catherine's Ontario 🇨🇦
Twenty-two GBR athletes raced 30 different entries over the course of 6 days against top teams from Canada, the US, and beyond! GBR had several impressive showings on the water, including Joe Vanasco making it to finals in the single, and multiple boats making it to semis throughout the week.
Thank you to everyone at Royal Canadian Henley Regatta for an unforgettable event we look forward to every summer, and to all of the GBR families who made this trip possible for the team.
Now everyone rest up, the fall season is right around the corner!

That's a wrap on the High School Summer Competitive Season! We celebrated our final practice this morning with the first annual Horseshoe Crab Sprints - a chaotic competitive event between two mixed eights. We raced a long course, a 2 minute sprint, a 360 degree spin, a backing sprint, and the highlight event, the Hot Seat. Team Eric came out on top, taking home the coveted tony trophies, and the bonus point for best team theme (Hannaford Eric).

A huge thank you to Coach Amanda for working with this group this summer! Your video analysis, technical eye, and supportive, encouraging spirit was amazing, and we will miss you as you head back to UMass.

To our graduates Saige, Owen, Griffin, Joe, and Eric, who are heading to college as soon as tomorrow, we wish you the best of everything! Make good choices (and maybe a few bad ones), have fun, learn lots, and remember that GBR is always here for you to come home to ❤️
