Hunter ran his third night in the sport mod; his progress has been great. As a driver, he is getting more and more comfortable. His car got pretty banged up, but he learned a lot and brought it home mostly in one piece.

We also went to practice last night to turn some laps and worked on some driving techniques. Dad hopped in the car and found some issues with the chassis causing some inconsistency in feel.

We are currently looking at purchasing a newer chassis for Hunter; we have our eye on one right now and are in negotiations. With that said, we are hoping this will give him a better chance to compete.

Well, Sunday night at Dubuque, Hunter had a complete 180 from the track on opening night. They had it juiced up, fast, and very racey. The more laps he gets, the more comfortable he is becoming in the car; Dad has to work on the setup a bit more, but progress is being made.

Many people think racing is just turning left and driving in a circle, and if you break it all the way down and ignore all the details besides two, you'd be correct. Watching Hunter struggle to drive the car into the corner and get the chassis and suspension to work consistently as they should is hard. It's hard to teach someone how to drive a race car; we can explain it to them and what to do in given situations. It takes a lot of confidence and experience to drive a car into the corner on throttle and manipulate the brake or steering input to get the right weight transfer without sacrificing momentum. I have no doubt in my mind that Hunter will be successful; now I just need to do my part and have the car stable for him.

We had the week off with the Late Model, with our engine package we are competitive in IMCA. The Premier Late Model Series came to Dubuque Sunday, and with the changes they made to their rules this past offseason, it will put an even bigger gap in performance on us. So, we decided to save our equipment and stay within our budget-friendly series. I do have to give credit where it's due, though; they put on a hell of a show!

Sport Mod:
Hunter Fortmann had his hands full Sunday night; the track was slick, and his tires were old, but he kept great composure as he ticked off laps and worked on building his experience. He was down on himself for not having the speed to compete, but we couldn’t be more proud of him for maintaining car control, holding his line when he got the layover flag, and bringing the car home in one piece.

Late Model:
What a night! We won the feature! We started 4th, drew to the 2 chip in the heat, didn’t get the best restart, and fell in line behind the 77 for the first half of the race before making a move to his outside and getting by him. We then set sail; our Mars Race Cars on CMD Race Shocks took off, pulling out a big lead as we took the checkered flag.

We definitely couldn’t do any of this without our great marketing partners, including Terry Fortmann with Turpin Bodyshop for the $100 win bonus, and our amazing crew. Big thanks to Steve Miller, Chris Greene, Hunter Fortmann, my beautiful wife Karma Fortmann, and Adam Slade. Big thanks to Dan Wand for pulling the Sport Mod to the track for us.

Getting some new shoes on our haulers tomorrow after two blown tires in the last three trips, big thanks to Terry Fortmann with Turpin Body Shop for the help mounting the new rubber, these shoes will definitely be heavier duty and more reliable to get us down the road!

Last night, we shook down both cars at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway. Hunter got some valuable laps in and really started building his confidence. I appreciate the patience of the other drivers on track with him being a rookie and taking his first real laps in the car - there's definitely a learning curve. The late model felt great; I have to say CMD Race Shocks knocked this package out of the park. Definitely excited to get some new rubber on the car and see what we have for the competition this year. Overall, it was a satisfying night at the track. Thanks to Steve, Chris, Will, Adam, and Dan for the help with the cars and hauling the second car to the track.

Big thanks to Eichman's with Ron Klein and Stacy L Eichman for hosting their car show yesterday; it was a beautiful day and a great turnout! Sadly, we weren’t able to have our cars there, but we still showed up and had some great steak sandwiches, and may have tallied that tab a bit too high on the cold beverages. They hosted their annual tire-changing contest where Hunter Fortmann and Chris Greene took the top spot, bringing home the first plastic gold for the season!

Sadly, we will not have the cars at Eichman's Car Show this afternoon. We pushed and did our best to be ready, but with the fire in February and then being out of town for work 3 of the last 4 weeks, we weren't able to finish. We are definitely bummed out about not having our cars there, but we will still be there supporting the event, so make sure to stop out - the steak sandwiches are delicious and the beer is ice cold!
