My Why
My name is Tracy Nolan, and I am a breast cancer survivor of nine years. I was diagnosed in July 2017, just two weeks before my father passed away from esophageal cancer. For three years before my own diagnosis, I was his caregiver, walking beside him in his journey, offering comfort, and witnessing firsthand the struggles that come with cancer treatments.
During my father's treatments, I noticed a glaring gap in patient care. The facility provided little more than a snack basket and a fridge with drinks. The environment was bleak, with no color, no privacy, and patients sitting in a single room, simply staring at one another. When I began my own treatments, I saw the same issues. An experience that lacked warmth, comfort, and meaningful support. The only additional offering was a makeup class with products that didn't suit my complexion and a tutorial on hair extensions, which was irrelevant for me as I lacked the hair to attach to. These moments reinforced my belief that cancer patients deserve better.
Today, thankfully, cancer treatment facilities have transformed into bright, welcoming spaces that offer privacy and dignity. However, I saw another need: a need for adults battling cancer to receive the same kind of care and attention that is often dedicated to children fighting their fight.
Determined to make a difference, I started creating Chemo Care Bags, small packages of comfort items designed to bring warmth and reassurance to those undergoing treatment.
The Chemo Care Bags contain items that helped me through my journey, including:
• A lap blanket, fuzzy socks, and thin gloves for warmth and comfort
• A notebook, adult coloring book, colored pencils, and a calendar for distraction and organization
• Tums, chapstick, lotion, tissues, suck-on candy, and flavored water packets for relief and hydration
• Sanitizer, gum, a deck of cards, and a word search puzzle to pass the time
• A gift card for a local restaurant because not cooking brings joy
• A cup for water as hydration is key when going through treatments
Thankfully, I am not alone in this mission. I have an incredible army of family and friends who help make this vision come to life.
While I have explored transitioning this effort into a nonprofit to help secure more donations, completing the necessary bylaws has felt overwhelming, especially while caring for my mother, who lost her fight to Alzheimer's in May.
Despite these challenges, my commitment remains strong. My efforts began with a Turkey Trot at the Key West Cemetery on Thanksgiving morning. What started as a small event has now been going strong for over 10 years.
I also raise funds through:
• Super Bowl and World Series boards
• Burger Nights
• Trivia Nights
• Christmas in July
• The annual Ranger Ride
Beyond these events, some community members have hosted fundraisers on my behalf, donating their proceeds to my cause. Thank you all for being here today and for supporting this mission. It is proof that together, we can bring light into the darkest moments and remind every fighter that they are never alone.
