Cougar Legend
Tonight, we are introducing a distinction reserved exclusively for an athlete whose impact is still being felt long after they have graduated. We are honoring a true Cougar Legend.
When an athlete does something truly remarkable and sets a brand new golden standard, it forces a program to change. I imagine it is rare for a coach to have to create an entirely new category of award just to match a runner's excellence, but that is exactly what happened here. This distinction is so rare, and the bar has been set so high, that I imagine this award may never be given to another Cougar in our lifetimes.
To say this individual completely dominated our history books is an understatement. They hold an unbelievable 10 individual school records and 3 relay school records. Indoors, they hold the records in the 300, 500, 1000, 1600, and 3200 meters. Outdoors, they own the records in the 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 meters. They were a critical force on our record-breaking relay squads, anchoring three different school-record teams, including the 4x400 meter and 4x800 meter relay teams.
Their dominance extended far beyond our school walls. They were ranked number one in the entire state of Virginia in the 800 meters. And on the biggest stage imaginable, they climbed to the absolute top of high school athletics, becoming the National Champion in the 1000 meters while setting the fastest National Record in history for that event.
True legends don't just win races while they are here; they leave behind a culture, a blueprint for the younger runners, and expectations that will challenge our athletes for generations to come.
Please stand and join me in honoring a true Cougar Legend... Cole Boone!
