This morning I snapped a picture in Savasana.
(don’t worry, I don’t usually do this! And I am sharing with permission 😊).
I was looking a this small group of beautiful souls, and I noticed something. Everyone person in class was taking their Savasana differently.
And it made me so HAPPY!!
This is the thing…as a teacher, I want to see people doing things differently. I teach to all different students, with different bodies and stories, it makes sense that poses would land differently in each. To see people taking ownership of their practice, moving intuitively, modifying, adding bits of comfort, resting in the middle of class, even going rogue and doing something entirely different…this all makes me so happy!!
People put so much emphasis on doing poses “properly,” and what I want students to know is that the fullest expression of a pose may be appropriate for today, but it may also NOT be (even if you did it yesterday!)
The best part…your body KNOWS. Our mind is what is always trying to fool us. This is where intuition comes into play, tuning in to what we already know and moving and breathing with that knowledge.
For traditional Savasana, we might lie flat on the back, legs long, feet rolling out, arms relaxed comfortably at the side. But resting in peace may also be achieved with the knees bent (releasing the low back), lying on your side (maybe more comforting for the nervous system), or even seated or spine elevated (great for pregnancy, anxiety, respiratory illnesses).
The basic purpose of co**se pose is to release and surrender, resting in stillness. And all of these shapes check off the boxes!
Good work yogis❤️
