If your child brings home a flyer in their school folder, pay attention.
If a friend invites your kid to try something they think they will like, GO!
It may just change your life.
In september 2019 Josiah was gifted an experience in a Real youth race car as a birthday present. We took him to Blackbird’s Drivers Experience that October 2019. We thought this will be a fun little day. We had no idea what it would mean for our next seven years.
Here’s what I’ve learned since then… bring extra clothes and say yes to the adventure.
You will go all in . You will get dirty in ways you never thought you would. Your child will have dirt and mulch in places that make you go hmmm.
You will spend your weeknights working on race cars and packing the trailer . Planning meals that can be eaten cold or reheated well and keep well in a cooler . Learning wich cleaner works best on body panels.
You will spend your weekends watching someone or a few someones you love drive in circles. You’ll learn that a very small race car or 2 or 7 can take up a very large part of your life.
Celebrate the heat wins. We've had many ,The lower mains lots of those too.
Some of those will take everything he or she has. Remember he is a kid , remember they are all kids.
Celebrate the improvements he made even if he finished last, if it was an improvement for him it deserves celebrating.
There may be some feature wins some regional experiences and even some nationals fun. A national is an experience all on its own.
There will be days when you drive and hang out all day and nothing goes right. Or you just get wet and muddy. Days when those sign ins are just a donation to the club , days when you wonder why you're doing all this. Days you wonder if you should just sell it all , Dont!
Go back. Let him learn how to congratulate the kids who beat him. Let him learn mistakes happen. Help him learn . Remember that you’re raising a person while you’re helping him become a driver.
Remember to look at life through his eyes.
Winning is the goal but it isnt everything
Make friends.
Somewhere between parking the trailer and packing it up again, these people will become your family. Family you didnt even know you needed.
Let the kids play, all day!
Before racing ,between racing, after the racing is over.
Even when it’s late. Even when you’ve raced for twelve hours and have to do it all again tomorrow. One day, you’ll realize those late nights at the track were some of the best nights of your life. Some of the best nights of theirs.
Some race days the kids couldn't tell you who won or lost on the race track but they can tell you all about what animals they caught or saw, who won on the hotwheels track on the playground , who had the best hit on the infield pick up wiffleball game.
Take the pictures.
Get the grandparents, family and friends in them. Get yourself in them, too. Even if the picture is unflattering cherish it.
You won’t know, standing there, how much you’ll want to remember all of it.
Since that 2019 Drivers Experience, we’ve made Blackbird Quarter Midget Race Club our home. A home we didnt know we needed.
Now we are helping run the days and Noah is the resident flagger. As we are getting ready to watch Josiah take his retirement laps at the same track where it all began, we are looking back.
Throughout this week, I’ll be sharing memories from his years in Quarter Midgets as we count down to Sunday. These pictures are where it all began
I look at these pictures and wonder how we got here so quickly. Its seems like yesterday I was saying your kid does what on the weekends are you nuts?!
So if a flyer comes home in your child’s school folder…
Or If your child gets invited by a friend
GO!
You won't regret it
