Between all the babies and the ever-changing herd, I’ve had well over 100 different goats over the past few years. I don’t think I’ve ever had one quite like him. He is literally OBSESSED with me! 😂🐐

Anyhow, I’m out here waiting on the generator repairman (because it’s ALWAYS something 🤦‍♀️) and killing some time.

Josophat is definitely “special” and quite the little cutie despite being a bit overbearing in the love department.

These babies worked up an extra healthy appetite tonight from all the outside play today. Usually they patiently wait their turn, but they were both ravenous so I had to feed them at the same time.

Good Tuesday Morning! (I almost wrote Monday … holiday weeks throw me off).

I was just thinking about how lucky I am to have landed here. This place really is starting to feel like “home,” and I’m loving putting down roots here …figuratively AND literally.

Speaking of rooting… 🌱

My neighbor buddy gave me these seeds, and we’re having a little friendly competition to see whose grow better. And if you know me, you know I have a competitive streak in me, so of course I want to WIN. 🤭

This will be my first attempt at growing mustard greens from seed (these seeds are TINY). I grew mustard greens and other greens pretty easily in Alabama in my polytunnel, but I started with established seedlings and didn’t direct sow them.

So, my Zone 8B (I’m in Louisiana ) gardeners… if you have any tips or suggestions for successfully direct-sowing mustard greens, I’d love to hear them!

And BTW, we are absolutely BLESSED with amazing neighbors. There are only three of us out here on this dirt road, so it’s such a relief that we all get along and have actually become friends. ❤️

I had to come inside to sit in AC for a few min and get some water. The weather is already BRUTAL today. It wouldn’t be so bad if there was a breeze, but the air is thick and stagnant. UGH!

One of the benefits of living in the Deep South is our long growing season. You can plant flower and veggie seeds all the way up until the beginning of October, which is pretty amazing. I still have a lot to get in the ground for my late fall/early winter crops, so I’m breaking up my planting and doing a little bit each day. 🌱

I’m trying sunflowers again. I know it’s a gamble with the deer, but that’s the fun of experimental gardening, right? And worst case, at least I’m feeding the wildlife. 🤷‍♀️ I also got two beds of lettuce, collard greens, beets, and broccoli planted.

We ordered a big, beautiful greenhouse back in June that was supposed to be delivered last month. The space is already prepped for it, but unfortunately, we found out two months after ordering that they were out of stock and had no idea when it would be available again.😡

So, we got a refund and now think we’re just going to design and build our own. Of course, that takes a lot more time and effort, so I’m bummed I won’t have it as soon as I’d hoped. But… it is what it is.

In the meantime, I’ll just keep planting……and sweating! 🥵 💚

Ya know, maybe I’ll get sick of bottle feeding eventually, but as of now, I actually look forward to it and absolutely love it.

Science tells me it triggers powerful bonding hormones like oxytocin. My heart knows that feeding them also feeds that deep emotional desire to nurture. There’s just something about it that makes me happy and feels like figurative “soul food”. ❤️

BTW, my body (arms) is feeling it too, haha. Getting a bit of a workout shaking up these bottles and getting the formula all mixed up. Reminds of that silly “Shake Weight” that was all the rage on infomercials years ago. 😆 💪🏼

I’ve figured out that I have to feed Ginny first. She’s so tiny but has a voracious appetite. She’s rambunctious and all over me (butting) until she gets her bottle. Meanwhile, Bébé is so docile and just sweet as can be. She’ll put her head on my lap and patiently wait her turn. 🥹

It does take more time, so I’m having to restructure my daily schedule and pad in more time. I may eventually buy some of those hanging bottle feeder racks for the days when I’m really busy or need help from someone else. But for now, I kind of like that they’re forcing me to slow down and just love on them.

I have SO much to do here over the next few days, so it’s time to get going and tackle my (2 page, single spaced 😳) to-do list. Lots of labor ahead of me on Labor Day.

Okay, I’ve been playing around with different names and trying them out all day, but the only one I keep coming back to and the one that just feels right for her is Ginny.

Sooo… officially, I present to you Ginny, my little Jersey girl. 💗 (Pic of bottle feeding her right now)

Y’all know that I absolutely love every single animal I have here on my farmstead. However, I’d be dishonest if I said I don’t have some favorites. I know some of you have your favorites, too. 😉 I already know in my heart that Ginny is going to be very special to me.

Jersey cows have been my favorite breed of cow for as long as I can remember. I even asked for one for Christmas when I was a little girl, but instead I got a stuffed one. 😆

Was I planning on adding a dairy cow? No.
Do I need a dairy cow? No.
Have I always wanted one? YES!

So even though I told myself I was only going to buy the two meat-breed babies, deep down I brought the extra money because I knew I was going to buy her, too. 😆 I have ZERO regrets!

She’s barely a week old and tiny in size, but she’s already BIG on personality. She gets so excited to see me, sucks her bottle down like a champ, has killer eyelashes, and does the cutest little bouncy hops. She faintly mooed earlier and it absolutely melted my heart. 🥹

I can only take so much cuteness! 🥰

Tomorrow, I think I’ll get her and Bebé out of their stall to introduce them to the grass for some supervised exploring and exercise. They’re still too little to go out on the pasture full-time, but at the rate they’re eating now, they should grow pretty quickly and before long, they’ll be joining Maggie May out there. 🐄💗
