Sunday Spotlight: Highlighting West Point Track & Field Legends!
Next up: Zach Douglas
Douglas, as he is better known by in the community, is a 2011 graduate of West Point High School. Douglas spearheaded what has become a long line of WP Track & Field athletes at the collegiate level. I have him traced back as our first collegiate athlete in the program. Since his career at Troy University, 14 other West Point Track & Field athletes have followed in his footsteps at the collegiate level.
Douglas was a dominant force in the throws during his time in the maroon and white. Between multiple all-county and county champion performances in the shot put, discus, and javelin, along with 3 all-state performances, Douglas set the standard that every West Point thrower who followed strove to achieve. He left our program holding the school record in the Outdoor Shot Put and Discus. His discus record of 149ā held for 13 years while his shot put record was just recently broken this past season after a 16 year run with a mark of 46ā. Douglas played a major role in his shot put record falling last season, offering lessons and pointers to Malik Howell on his journey to the West Point Track & Field record books.
But what Douglas accomplished in high school Track & Field was just scarping the surface of his true potential. He went on to be one of the most decorated throwers in Troy Universityās history. Douglas broke Troyās Shot Put and Discus records in 2016, holding the Shot Put record for 9 years with a mark of 61ā 2ā and owning the Discus record for 8 years with a toss of 181ā 8ā.
In Shot Put wearing the cardinal and silver, Douglas secured the Sun Belt Conferenceās bronze medalš„ in 2014. He would follow that up in 2016 being crowned CHAMPIONš„ of the Sun Belt Conferenceās Menās Shot Put. In 2017, Douglas secured a silver medalš„ at the Sun Belt Conference Championship in the same event, earning All-Sun Belt honors three times in the Shot Put while qualifying for the NCAA Division I National Championships three times in the event as well.
In Discus for the Trojans, Douglas secured a bronze medalš„ in the Sun Belt Conference Championships in 2016. He followed that performance with a gold medal in 2017 to be crowned CHAMPIONš„ of the Sun Belt Conference. That same year, Douglas was recognized for his dominance in the throws for the Sun Belt being named the 2017 Sun Belt Field Athlete of the Year.š Zach was a finalist for Troy Universityās athlete of the year in 2017 as well. In 2016, Douglas earned the title of MEET CHAMPIONš„ at the coveted Florida Relays Meet, one of Collegiate Track & Fieldās most competitive meets annually.
Douglas set a standard beyond simply making it to college. He established an expectation to excel beyond the 12th grade and carry that success onto the next level. He didnāt just āmake itā to college, Douglas DOMINATED at the collegiate level, a legacy that will never be forgotten as one of West Point Track & Fieldās greatest legends!
