In 2007, good friends Kyle McCarthy and Paul Percivalle decided they needed a new plan for their retirement. The two teamed up as business partners, and in 2008 Midstate Gun Company was opened as an 1100 square foot gun shop located on Sandy Bottom Road in Coventry, Rhode Island. As the business won success and notoriety amongst local shooters, it soon became time for Midstate to grow. In 2010, Ky

le and ‘Bubba’ pulled the trigger on building an indoor shooting range in Coventry which the public could enjoy. With a team of dedicated professionals now behind them, Kyle and Bubba opened the doors to today’s Midstate Gun Company in 2013. First of its kind in the state of Rhode Island, Midstate’s new location provides a safe, fun, and comfortable environment for families and individuals of any experience level to practice and learn about shooting. Today we offer personal instruction, specialized classes, and even a free course for anyone wanting to know more about fi****ms. Anyone who can pass a quick background check can shoot on the range, but we also offer various membership options for regular shooters to receive great benefits like lane reservations, guest passes, and discounts. Whether you’re a hobbyist, hunter, or just curious about shooting, we want to welcome you to Midstate.

The Difference Between Waiting and Surviving

Every second matters in an active shooter situation. Even the modern retail and corporate security world understands this reality. Major companies across America train employees under one simple concept during active shooter events: “Run. Hide. Fight.” The guidance exists because everyone recognizes a terrifying truth, which is that police are often minutes away while violence begins immediately. Now, that is not the fault of the officers. This stems from a rabbit hole of statistical warfare that shows the direct connection between defunding, lack of interest in the field due to political tension and theatre as well as the general ignorance and entitlement of our countries population.

But there is a major uncomfortable question few people are willing to ask openly, and that is if someone is forced into the “fight” stage of survival, would innocent people stand a better chance if the playing field was not completely one sided? For once this is not a question based on political rhetoric, this is a genuine question we should all be asking ourselves. Are people that worried about their political morality, that they would rather give themselves and others an unfair chance of survival, simply because of a tool that is being used as a political weapon? That is a real world question supported by decades of active shooter incidents across the United States.

In nearly every major active shooter incident where innocent people were forced to wait for police intervention, the casualty counts climbed rapidly and uncontrollably. Virginia Tech saw 47 people shot in only 9 minutes. The Aurora theater shooting resulted in 70 people shot in 7 minutes. Pulse Nightclub left 103 people shot before the nightmare ended. Columbine lasted 40 terrifying minutes while students and teachers hid helplessly.

Police officers are not to blame for this reality. Law enforcement responds as fast as humanly possible under chaotic conditions. Officers are often running toward gunfire while everyone else is fleeing from it. But physics, distance, traffic, dispatch times, confusion, and building layouts create one unavoidable truth, police almost always arrive after the attack has already begun. That delay not only costs lives, it costs someone's entire world. A wife loses a husband who has been her rock for 40 years. A father who pulled himself out of a life of addiction and bad decisions, loses his one reason for life, his child. A son loses a hero he prayed he would become one day. These incidents may last minutes, but the aftermath lasts a lifetime. All because of what? Political servitude that ignores logic or reason. You may sleep well at night with that decision, but they will never sleep right again.

The most important factor in stopping an active shooter is not where the nearest police cruiser is parked. It is whether someone on scene can immediately confront the attacker before the violence escalates. And the most recent shooting in Cambridge, Massachusetts paints a picture that gun owners have been screaming from the rooftops for years. That an armed citizen is not the defining savor, but it certainly evens the playing field and gives multiple lives the chance to continue.

In multiple incidents where an off duty officer, trained staff member, or legally armed civilian was already present when the attack began, the casualty counts remained dramatically lower. At Pearl High School in Mississippi, 9 people were shot before the school principal confronted and held the attacker at gunpoint. At Appalachian Law School in Virginia, only 6 people were shot before two armed students intervened and stopped the killer. At New Life Church in Colorado Springs, 5 people were shot before a church security volunteer engaged the attacker, ending the threat before dozens more could be harmed. At Trolley Square Mall in Utah, 9 people were shot before an off duty police officer confronted the gunman and pinned him down until SWAT arrived. In each case, the attacker was confronted quickly instead of being allowed uninterrupted minutes to hunt defenseless victims.

Critics often argue that civilians should simply “wait for trained professionals.” The problem is that active shooter events unfold in seconds, not hours. According to FBI studies and law enforcement training doctrine, most active shooter incidents are over before backup fully arrives. Evil does not wait patiently for a perimeter to be established.

The undeniable truth is that soft targets attract violent individuals precisely because resistance is unlikely. Gun free zones, restrictive carry policies, and bureaucratic barriers may create the appearance of safety, but appearance and reality are not the same thing. A sign on a door does not stop a murderer. Policies do not physically shield children in classrooms or families in shopping centers, immediate resistance and deterrence does. This argument is the comparison of telling your child to ignore the bully, where doing so does not hinder the bully, or bring them to a newfound self-reflection of moral aptitude. They continue to do so, because nobody stands in their way or stands up to them.

None of this means every citizen should carry a firearm by any means, we all know one person who we'd trust with our lives, but not with a firearm. It also does not mean reckless vigilantism should be encouraged, we see the groups taking it upon themselves now and they do not have a good track record at all. Responsible firearm ownership requires maturity, training, emotional control, and respect for the law. But America must stop pretending that law-abiding armed citizens have never saved lives during mass violence, or that the actual evidence of this should be ignored. History clearly shows otherwise.

Even more importantly, this conversation should not divide Americans into political tribes. Every parent, regardless of political affiliation, wants their child to come home safely from school. Every husband wants his wife protected in a grocery store. Every citizen wants to believe that if evil appears suddenly, innocent people will not be abandoned to wait helplessly for rescue. The debate should never be about glorifying violence; it should be about minimizing it.

When seconds decide whether families lose loved ones forever, immediate action saves lives and that evidence is difficult to ignore. The faster an attacker is confronted, the fewer victims there tend to be. Sometimes that confrontation comes from the police. Sometimes it comes from a law abiding citizen already standing nearby. But the victims do not care about politics in those moments. They will not quickly dial the phone and contact their local anti-2A representative to save the day. The local “resistance” groups won't show up with their colorful trash can lids and loudspeakers to cancel or shame the shooter into submission. They will hide, pray and beg for the individuals with the fi****ms to come save the day. So why can't a law abiding citizen be prepared?
