Some mornings, the front Porte-cochère does all the talking. The columns catch the last clean light of the day, the flag holds still, the drive sits quiet. Early fall is just beginning to show at the edges, a reminder that this is The Otesaga Resort Hotel at its most "itself", unhurried and sure of what it is.

Twenty-six years. The same promise, kept.

Happy National Photography Day.

Some places just ask to be photographed. The cupola at first light, the porch in afternoon shadow, the lake holding the whole property still. We have been giving people a reason to reach for the camera since 1909.

There is a point above Otsego Lake where the whole valley comes into view at once. The water, the village of Cooperstown, the fairways at Leatherstocking Golf Course, and the resort sitting quietly at the center of it, since 1909.

This is the lake James Fenimore Cooper called the Glimmerglass. We just call it home.

From above, the eighteenth tells the whole story: the island tee, the bridge across the water, the fairway bending along Otsego Lake, and beyond it, the hotel that has watched over this course since 1909.

A course holds up like this because people make it. For a century and a half, a "small" stone tower has stood at the northern end of Otsego Lake. Kingfisher Tower was built in 1876, a Gothic folly raised by Edward Clark to beautify the water and to give local workers steady work through an economic downturn. The same Clark family would build The Otesaga a generation later, in 1909. Two structures on one lake, shaped by one family, both still standing after all this time. If you have ever watched it appear through the trees from the deck of a boat, you know the quiet surprise of it. One hundred and fifty years on, the lake would not look the same without it.
