Scaling isn’t about making the workout easier. It’s about making the workout right for you.
There’s a difference.
A good coach isn’t asking, “Can you technically do this movement?”
They’re considering:
Can you perform it safely?
Can you maintain the intended stimulus?
Is the load appropriate for your current ability?
Will this variation move you closer to where you want to go?
Because doing the prescribed workout at all costs isn’t the goal.
Getting the right training effect is.
That might mean reducing the weight.
Changing the movement.
Adjusting reps.
Or, sometimes, a coach telling you that you’re capable of more than you think and it’s time to push.
That’s why scaling isn’t reserved for beginners.
Experienced CrossFit athletes scale. Competitive athletes scale. Coaches scale.
The smartest athlete in the room isn’t always the one doing RX. It’s often the one who understands what they need from the workout that day.
And if you’re considering CrossFit but worried because you can’t do pull-ups, lift heavy weight, run fast, or perform movements you’ve seen online, that’s exactly where coaching comes in.
At White Horse CrossFit, our coaches help athletes choose appropriate movement variations, loads and intensity based on their current ability while still preserving the purpose of the workout.
You don’t need to know how to scale before you start.
That’s our job.
