This coming Saturday, Tamara is offering a new workshop at BL called Release & Restore. I recently read Tamara’s Instagram post describing this workshop and thought it was so well described that I would just use my antics as a platform to allow her to share her words with all of you…
“There was a time when stress had a pretty clear beginning, middle, and end.
Imagine our ancient ancestors encountering a saber-toothed tiger
Their bodies responded instantly
Heart rate increased
Breathing quickened
Muscles engaged
Energy mobilized
They ran, fought, or escaped.
And when the threat was over, their bodies had an opportunity to move out of that activated state and return toward baseline.
But today?
Our saber-toothed tigers look more like:
An email from your boss
A difficult conversation
A text that feels off
Traffic
A never ending to do list
Financial worries
And what do we often do with all that activation?
We sit
We think
We analyze
We override
We keep going
Our minds process the experience…but our bodies don’t always get an opportunity to complete the physical side of the stress response
And that’s one reason I’ve fallen in love with “somatic work”
Somatic release isn’t about forcing your body to let go.
It’s about slowing down enough to notice what’s happening inside you and using gentle movement, breath, sensation and awareness to help your nervous system shift out of patterns of tension and activation.
Sometimes that looks like shaking
Sometimes it’s stretching
Sometimes it’s a deep exhale
Sometimes it’s simply noticing: Oh I’ve been holding my breath this whole time
Because your body is part of the conversation too.
And this is why my work has expanded beyond mindset and habits.
I still believe in the power of thoughts and choices
But if we’re only working with the mind, we’re missing an important piece of the picture.
The body matters.
That’s exactly what we’ll explore in my Release & Restore Somatic Workshop on September 12th at Body Language. 1-2:15 pm
A little movement
A little breath
A little release
A lot more listening”
