Well we started the deer season off with several calls and a few recovery’s.
#1 was a deer that he wasn’t sure about his shot placement and backed out and gave us a call. We arrived and located the deer and found him to be fatally wounded but was not quite there yet. They were able to go in the next morning and recover him. At the hunters request we will not be sharing the pics of the deer but let’s just say he was a tank.

#2 was last night and it was a pretty amazing story how this hunter ended up with this deer. But a long story short he thought he hit back farther than what he did and they tracked blood across a road and they backed out and gave us a call. We arrived and found the buck to be deceased and we were able to recover this one. We would to say thank you to every one that has called and requested us this far. It means the world to us here at Fly High Thermal Recoveries.

Just a few last minute reminders and tips

We may have missed our Friday Hunting Tip, but this is one we definitely wanted to get out before deer season! 🦌🏹

🩸 KNOW YOUR BLOOD — IT CAN TELL YOU A LOT!

After the shot, pay close attention to what you see. The color, consistency, and appearance of the blood can give you important clues about where the deer may have been hit — and, most importantly, how long you should wait before taking up the trail.

🔴 HEART/LUNGS — Bright red blood, often with bubbles or a frothy appearance.
🟣 LIVER — Typically darker red blood with a smoother consistency.
🟢 PAUNCH/GUT — May have greenish/yellowish material, stomach contents, or a foul odor.
⚪ VERY LITTLE OR NO BLOOD — Don’t automatically assume you missed! Hair, tracks, the deer’s reaction, and other signs can still tell part of the story.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is pushing a wounded deer because you’re anxious to start tracking. If anything about the shot or blood makes you unsure, give that deer time.

📍 Mark where the deer was standing when you shot.
📍 Mark the last blood you find.
📱 Save your coordinates.
🚫 Don’t keep pushing the trail if things don’t look right.

A deer that is left alone is often much easier to recover than one that has been bumped and pushed.

🎯 FRIDAY DEER HUNTING TIP — KNOW YOUR SHOT PLACEMENT! 🦌

As deer season gets closer, one of the most important things every hunter can do is understand deer anatomy and know exactly where to place your shot.

The graphics below are a great reference because shot placement can change depending on whether the deer is broadside, quartering away, quartering toward, or facing you. Knowing where the heart, lungs, liver, shoulder, and other organs are located—and understanding how your angle changes the path of your shot—can make a huge difference.

A good shot isn’t just about hitting the deer. It’s about making the most ethical and effective shot possible, creating a quick harvest and increasing your chances of a successful recovery.

Remember:

• Know your deer anatomy.
• Pay attention to the deer’s angle.
• Pick a specific aiming point—don’t just aim at the deer.
• Be patient and wait for the best shot opportunity.
• Know your abilities and your equipment.
• After the shot, watch the deer closely and mark the exact location where it was standing.
• If the shot is questionable, DON’T PUSH THE DEER.

Sometimes the difference between recovering a deer and losing one starts before the trigger is pulled or the arrow is released.

Study these charts. Save them. Share them with a new hunter. Teaching good shot placement helps all of us become better, more ethical hunters.

🦌 FRIDAY DEER HUNTING TIP — WAIT TIMES MATTER! 🦌

Well, it’s Friday! As promised, every Friday leading up to deer season, Fly High Thermal Recoveries will be sharing tips we’ve learned over the years to help hunters have the best possible chance of recovering their downed deer.

🎯 TODAY’S TOPIC: WAIT TIMES

One of the biggest factors in a successful recovery happens before you ever start tracking — giving that deer enough time.

After the shot, adrenaline is high. You want to climb down, find blood, and start looking immediately. But rushing the recovery can turn a recoverable deer into a deer that is extremely difficult to find.

If you see the deer go down, stay in your stand and watch it. Give it at least 30–45 minutes with absolutely no movement before getting down.

If you’re unsure about the shot, DON’T PUSH THE DEER. Your best move may be to wait, back out, and give it more time. A wounded deer that is left undisturbed will often bed down. If you bump that deer from its first bed, it can travel a long distance and make recovery much more difficult.

✅ Remember:
• Pay attention to exactly where the deer was standing when you shot.
• Watch where it goes and mark the last place you saw it.
• Don’t rush to start tracking.
• If you begin tracking and become unsure, STOP.
• Don’t keep walking around looking for blood and potentially pushing the deer.
• When in doubt, back out!

Every shot and every recovery is different. Waiting a little longer can be the difference between recovering your deer and never seeing it again.
