🚲 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: A piece of cycling history just rolled out of the shop! 🚲

We just finished working on this rare, vintage 1980s Alenax TRB 790. Instead of a standard circular pedal stroke, this unique design features an up-and-down "Transbar Power" mechanical system. Because these haven't been made in decades, finding a shop with the expertise to service them can be a challenge. But with over three decades of experience, you came to the right place!

The owner picked it up, ready to ride. At Rock on Wheels, there is really no bike we cannot work on. From rare vintage classics to modern high-performance machines, we have the skills to handle it all. 🛠️

We’re taking the day to celebrate YOU—the hardworking folks who keep our community moving, building, creating, serving, and making things happen. And that includes our hardworking Rock on Wheels crew! ❤️

We figured if we’re going to take a day off… we might as well put those wheels to work! 😉

You can probably find us out on the trails, chasing some singletrack, getting a little dirt on the tires, and enjoying the ride. 🚵‍♂️💨

We are glad he did.

The first bicycle: 1817! 🚲

The humble beginnings of the bicycle might surprise many cycling enthusiasts. Back in 1817, a German baron named Karl von Drais introduced the world to something peculiar, a two-wheeled contraption without pedals.

Known as the "Laufmaschine" (or running machine), this wooden predecessor to our modern bicycle weighed a hefty 48 pounds. Riders would walk-run while seated, pushing off the ground with their feet to move forward.

This quirky invention, nicknamed the "dandy horse," proved its worth on its very first test ride. Von Drais covered 5 miles, showing skeptics that his creation wasn't just some nobleman's folly.

The Laufmaschine was built mostly from wood, with a steerable front wheel that let riders change direction. It had no pedals and no chain. What it did have was the straight-line balance principle that still sits at the heart of modern bicycle design.

It would take another 40+ years before pedals entered the picture. In France, Pierre and Ernest Michaux built the first pedal-powered bicycle, with cranks and pedals attached directly to the front wheel.

However, it was the 1817 wooden wonder that laid the groundwork for the bicycles we know and love today.
