The biggest mistake a returning runner is going to make is comparing their current fitness to their younger self.

Easy runs should be very slow, and athletes should resist rushing into harder workouts or longer long runs when fitness initially returns quickly.

Patience, gradual mileage increases, and consistency ultimately make the difficult return worthwhile.

I haven't trained for a marathon in 7 years.

That means, for 7 years, I stuck to shorter races - I've gotten away from 2+ hour-long runs, nutrition during runs, and needing a weekend nap after a run.

Despite being tired for most of the time, I feel very comfortable being completely out of my comfort zone.

I'm still learning what my body is capable of and figuring out what I need during runs and how much recovery I need after a run, but I'm managing well.

What helps you make marathon training fun?

My wife and I are celebrating our 12th wedding anniversary today.

One of our first dates was a run and hot yoga session, so it's safe to say that running is a big part of our lives.

Here's to many more miles together!

If you deal with chronic shin or calf pain, it's really important to manage the pain or discomfort before it becomes an injury.

I run 6 days a week, and I am constantly attending to my calves. As I build up towards the Philly Marathon, I can't get derailed by a calf injury, so I spend a considerable amount of time making sure everything is good to go.

I make sure that I'm warmed up with some activation drills and pre-run drills and then after my run I stretch and foam roll or use my Lifepro | Wellness, Fitness, Recovery massage gun to help relieve some of my tight spots.

What are you doing to stay injury-free? Share in the comments what works for you.

I remember the days when we had Chrono Nike watches that let us take splits during track workouts. When we worked out on the roads, our coach had measured the loop for us.

We've come a LONG way since then and yet, some of us are still using our GPS watches like we're in the 2000's. It's time to adjust how you use your watch during workouts.

This newsletter post is a quick read that will have your watch taking splits for you no matter where you do your workouts at.

The Philly Marathon in 15 weeks!

For this training block, I'm using a non-conventional approach to getting in my mileage while also focusing on recovering from each run.

It's not for everyone, but it's working for me. Give my post a read and let me know what you think: https://trainwithmarc.substack.com/p/10-day-training-cycle

Most runners are running WAY too fast on their runs.

Here’s how I know (from a coach of 16 years and a 4:08 miler):

🫆 You finish your run out of breath and/or you need days of recovery after an easy run.
🫆 Your race pace and your everyday pace are very close to each other.
🫆 You really have no idea what pace you should be running, so you just go out and wing it.
🫆 You can go for a long time at your “easy pace”, but can’t turn up the pace when asked.
🫆 You can’t tell the difference between your sprint and your run pace.
🫆 Your long runs aren’t long because you either die after ‘x miles’ or you can’t see yourself holding your pace for that long.

Here’s how to make some changes right away:
⚡️ Do the talk test. If you can finish a run and still be talking in complete sentences, you’re running the correct pace.
⚡️ Use a pace calculator to determine what pace you should be running based on race results.
⚡️You may not be ready for workouts if your easy runs are too fast because everything is already too much.

If you’re still stuck and don’t know what to do, let’s have that talk about training!

How many pairs of shoes are you rotating through in any given training cycle?

The more pairs of shoes you wear during training, the longer your shoes will last. Why’s that?

Because your shoes will have a chance to “recover” between your workouts, allowing them to bounce back quicker.

Do I realize that having more than one pair of shoes is a privilege that not everyone can afford? Yes, of course.

But if you can wear more than one pair, rotate them in and out throughout the week. You might want to consider using an everyday training shoe for most of your runs and a separate workout or race-day shoe for your faster sessions.

We’ve all had to take a break from running at some point. In my opinion, the hardest part about the comeback is doing too much, too soon.

Patience is what will get you back and keep you going.
