‼ STORM RESPONSE UPDATE | AUGUST 17, 8:37 PM
This evening, Mayor Amy Goodwin declared a State of Emergency in the City of Charleston in response to significant flooding and storm damage from the August 16 storms. The declaration provides the City additional flexibility to coordinate personnel, equipment and resources as response, damage assessment, cleanup and recovery efforts continue.

Earlier today, Mayor Goodwin and Chad Jones, Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, visited impacted areas, speaking with residents and assessing damage throughout the community.

City crews have been working since yesterday to clear debris and address impacted roadways and drainage issues. The Charleston Police Department has also increased patrols in affected neighborhoods to assist residents and help connect them with available resources.

Assessment, cleanup and response efforts remain ongoing across impacted areas.

🔸NEED CLEANING SUPPLIES?
Residents impacted by flooding can:
- Stop by the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center during regular operating hours to pick up available cleanup supplies.
- Call 211 for information about available resources.
- Speak with a Charleston Police officer or City team member working in an impacted area for assistance connecting with resources.

🔸 WANT TO DONATE?
Cleaning and recovery supplies can be dropped off at the Charleston, WV Parks and Recreation Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

Current needs include:
- Mops
- Bottled water
- 5-gallon buckets
- Disinfectant cleaner
- Flathead shovels
- Fans and dehumidifiers
- Heavy-duty trash bags
- Work gloves
- Paper towels

🔸 TETANUS SHOTS
The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department's Clinic Team will be giving free tetanus and Hepatitis A shots to those affected by flooding Tuesday, August 18.
- 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM | Garrison Avenue – underneath the interstate bridge
- 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM | Sugar Creek – mouth of Sugar Creek Drive off of Sissonville Drive at the former Charleston Fire Station.

Anyone unable to make it to one of the mobile clinics can go to KCHD's location at 108 Lee St. E.

🔸 TRASH COLLECTION
Trash collection will remain on its normal schedule.

Residents may place flood-related debris out for regular trash collection.

🔸 ROAD REPAIR WORK
WV Paving will conduct repair work on Edgewood Drive, from Washington Street to Beech Avenue, from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

The work will address a section of roadway damaged by flooding. Motorists should use an alternate route and avoid traveling through the affected section of Edgewood Drive while repairs are underway.

🔸 CPD INCREASES PATROLS IN FLOOD IMPACTED AREAS
The Charleston, WV Police Department is increasing patrols in several of the hardest-hit areas, including:

Wertz Avenue • Garrison Avenue • Sugar Creek Drive • Scraggs Drive • Hanna Drive • Greenbrier Street • Chandler Drive

Officers will maintain an increased presence in these areas as residents begin cleanup and recovery efforts. Officers will also be available to assist residents and help connect those impacted by flooding with available resources.

It was a nail biter in Hurricane today for the annual Badges Battle at the Bridge softball tournament, but the CFD came out victorious edging out Hurricane Police Dept. for the championship. We would like to include on our path to the championship, we were able to give a loss to the South Charleston Fire Department (as usual).

It’s not all about responding to emergencies, the CFD spends many hours supporting our community. Today, Engine 8 had the privilege to interact with the youth at the Kids Summer Bash at Hills Plaza hosted by FamilyCare Health Centers - WV. Stop by and see them until 3pm!

🚤 Boater Notice: Charleston Sternwheel Regatta Fireworks Spectacular

For the safety of spectators, boaters, and emergency personnel, portions of the Kanawha River will be restricted during tonight's fireworks display.

Please review the included map and remain outside of the designated safety zones starting at 9 PM.

All boaters are asked to follow the instructions of emergency personnel and law enforcement.

🎆 Tonight's the night! Here's what you need to know before the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta Fireworks Spectacular at 9:45 PM.

To help you plan your evening, we've compiled information on viewing locations, road closures, and important safety reminders.

PLEASE NOTE: The previous post was removed and reposted with updated road closure information to avoid confusion, as Facebook does not permit edits to alert posts.

📍 Recommended Viewing Areas

⭐ Magic Island Area
⭐ Haddad Riverfront Park
⭐ State Capitol / University of Charleston Area

Fireworks are expected to begin at approximately 9:45 PM and will launch from multiple locations as part of our celebration of America's 250th birthday. 🇺🇸

🚧 Road Closures
Preparations for tonight's fireworks display are already underway, with additional closures beginning at 8 PM and 9 PM. Please review the attached graphic and plan ahead, allowing extra travel time.

Please note: Most roadways are expected to reopen approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the fireworks display, once public safety personnel have cleared the area and street sweeping operations have been completed.

🚤 Boaters
Boaters on the Kanawha River are asked to follow all instructions provided by emergency personnel and law enforcement on the water to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Stay hydrated and take breaks as needed.
Arrive early to secure your preferred viewing location.
Be patient as traffic exits the area following the fireworks display.

We know it is going to be hot this week, so we are taking extra steps to make sure everyone can enjoy the 2026 Charleston Sternwheel Regatta safely. The map below shows Cooling Stations, Water Bottle Fill Stations and Medical Tents on Kanawha Boulevard. Charleston Fire Department medics and members of the Charleston, WV Police Department will be walking around the Boulevard as well, so do not hesitate to ask for assistance if you need anything

In addition, over in the WesBanco Family Fun Zone, there will be a Cooling Station, Water Bottle Fill Station and Medical Tent. Plus the water slides and the Slack Plaza Water Feature are great ways to cool off.

Special thanks to West Virginia American Water for providing an extra Water Bottle Fill Station which will be located at the corner of Laidley Street and Kanawha Boulevard.
