What does “amateur-friendly” actually mean?

Because somewhere along the way, “amateur” started being used as a synonym for “inexperienced.”

It isn’t.

An amateur can be nervous jumping 18 inches.

An amateur can also be jumping 1.20m.

Both are amateurs.

I see “amateur-friendly” in sale ads all the time, but an amateur isn't a riding level.

So when someone asks me if a horse is amateur-friendly, my answer usually isn't just yes or no.

Does the horse forgive mistakes?

Does it stay rideable when the rider gets nervous?

Does it need perfect timing to get the right answer?

What happens when you miss?

Can it have a few days off and come back the same horse?

Does it require a rider who can confidently ride it forward?

Does it get its confidence from the rider, or can it give confidence to the rider?

There are horses I would happily put certain amateurs on that I wouldn't put other amateurs on—and that isn't an insult to either rider.

The goal isn't to find an “amateur-friendly” horse.

It's to find a horse that's friendly to THAT amateur.

So I'm curious: when you see “amateur-friendly” in a sale ad, what do you assume it means?

Okay… apparently quite a few of you actually want to do this.

So, here are some actual details about the Thoroughbred Makeover Team!

Six riders on one thoroughbred, December through October.

We did a version of this back in 2021, and these photos are from that team horse. This time, I want to take the concept even further and give riders the opportunity to be involved in the entire process a little differently.

The goal is to learn what actually goes into producing an OTTB from the beginning all the way to the Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover in Kentucky.

And this isn't just a weekly riding lesson.

You'll be involved in all of it — groundwork, grooming, handling, watching training rides, learning why we make certain training decisions, riding when the horse is ready, outings, shows and eventually Kentucky.

Riders will continue their normal riding lessons throughout the program. This is meant to add to their education, not replace it.

Each horse will have a maximum of six team members at $250/month, with the commitment running from December through the Makeover in October.

My hope is to have both a teen team and an adult amateur team.

I'm donating my training and teaching time because if we want to develop the next generation of capable riders, horsemen and trainers, we have to give them opportunities to actually learn how horses are made—not just ride them once they're finished.

TVR Modigliani “Modi” is a 3-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding with quality sport horse breeding through Mosaic Art, State of the Art and Art Deco.

Modi is currently in professional training and progressing through the starting process. He leads, cross-ties, bathes, loads and is comfortably wearing tack. He has not yet been backed and will be best suited to an experienced home comfortable continuing the education of a young horse.

From feral to following. 🥹

Last week, I got a halter partially on Snitch and decided that was enough.

Could I have pushed for more? Probably.

But I didn’t need to.

Today, the halter went all the way on… and then we went for a walk. ❤️

For a mare who came to me feral, incredibly protective of herself and her baby, and convinced that humans were pretty questionable creatures, this is HUGE.

There’s still a long way to go, but this is why I don’t rush them.

Slow is still fast.

I’ve said for a long time that I want to put my money where my mouth is when it comes to bringing up the next generation of horse trainers.

So… I bought them a Thoroughbred. 😂

Meet Kung Foo, aka Po. 🖤

Over the next year, I’m donating my time to teach a small group of riders what actually goes into starting and producing a young horse — from the very beginning, all the way to the 2027 Thoroughbred Makeover in Kentucky.

Po may have had a speed figure of 0, but hopefully he’s about to be very good at his new job. 😂

This program will be open to current KH riders. Kids, teens AND adult amateurs are welcome.

Modi Episode 1

How do you teach a young horse about a girth without making the girth a big deal?

Start with a polo wrap.

Before I ever tighten a girth around a young horse, I want them comfortable with the idea of pressure around their belly.

A polo wrap lets me introduce that feeling gradually. I can wrap it loosely, let them process it, add a little pressure, and see how they react — without jumping straight to buckling on a surcingle or saddle.

The goal isn’t to see how much they’ll tolerate.

The goal is for it to be so boring that when the real girth comes out, they already understand the question.

Little steps now make much bigger steps later a whole lot less exciting!

Was it a perfect weekend? NOPE!

But producing a young horse is not about chasing ribbons. It’s making sure the horse comes home more educated, more confident, and more prepared for the next one and we achieved exactly that!

Next stop for Tempus Fugit EZ , Majestic Oaks Ocala!
