Introducing inside position and transition options in the fight.

Working through headlocks.

Priorities are:

1. Protect your neck ( tucking the chin early is key) to prioritize airflow and blood supply to the brain.

2. Stay standing when possible, if you go down still prioritize tucking the chin and keeping airflow and blood flow to the brain. If the choke is released, prioritize their arms and hands hitting or choking you. Top position is ideal when grounded.

3. Strike primary targets when possible; goal is to not risk attacker getting a better position or continuing to choke you.

Stick defense: Overhead swing

When you have early recognition and readiness the general idea here is to burst in protecting your head and to immediately strike. Knee is a great first option.

This video highlights takeaway options utilizing body leverage against the grip; inward and outward depending on hand positioning.

Important note: Bursting in is an option, so is a takeaway and depends based off the specifics of the fight. Some specifics might be the environment, no option to retreat, nothing to use as a shield, your mental and physical condition etc. list can go on.

KM Self Defense uses small challenges and fight problems to help students learn, adapt, and make decisions faster.

Based off responses, you can quickly add new problems into the fight. Progression doesn’t need to be slow if you are actually paying attention as a coach.

Solving the fight problem from your back.

Priorities: Take back the initiative!

Protect your vitals (movement, frames, controlling limbs)
Don’t get pinned (movement, frames, posts, striking)
Getting back to your feet (movement, frames, striking, choke, limb control)

These is not a complete list. Start adding more goals for the attacker and the defender. Start solving problems based off the priorities.

I’ll be elaborating more on my top 3 principles for personal safety, in the upcoming weeks.

These are my Top 3 but not my only 3.

Each one falls under one or more of the elements we train at KM Self Defense. Awareness, Communication, and Fight.

A quick correction while working technical stand up basics.

WHAT NOT TO DO: (both hands down behind them (which is a very limiting position and even if it gives you a kick there is too much room for error)

WHAT TO DO: One hand down and one up, bearing weight to stand up becomes more stable, and you have options to kick, transition back, or get up quicker.

Technical stand up options.

Handling an approach has an infinite amount of variables. To name a few; location, time, relation/gender, environment, obstacles, culture, your condition, mental state.

Did you see them approach or did they come up beside you, are they already touching you… the list goes on.

Training to manage the space between you and a potential threat isn’t always automatic.

You have limited information to go on.

Things to practice:

Dialogue exchange in different scenarios, using specific phrases to maintain, regain, or increase the space before getting sucked into their conversation.

Keeping your hands up and in between you and the person.

Movement in the environment in relation to the person and other objects/people around.
