A Commentary: A New Attitude in Flea Hop
I couldn’t make the trip to Richton, but I’ve heard from a few people that something is different about these Bears. I noticed it last week at the jamboree. Despite the scoreboard not being what the West Lincoln faithful wanted either week, I – and many others – have noticed something different about these Bears. There has been improvement in skill, size, and speed to be sure, but I’ve also noticed something else: Resilience. At no time during the jamboree did the boys quit. They kept pushing even when the other team got on the board or intercepted a pass. From all accounts, much the same happened in Richton last night.
The reality is that teams are going to lose. Even the best state championship teams suffer a loss at some point. What defines a team’s success is not always wins or losses but what happens after the play is over. When a team has leaders – teammates and coaches - who lift up one another and keep the focus on the game, success will come.
One could debate the source of this new energy, but the bottom line is that it’s there. I’m excited to see what the 2026 West Lincoln football team does. They have a tough schedule, but I have a feeling that strides will have been made over last year that will have people talking. Let’s do our part to keep the energy up by packing the bleachers at Perry Miller Field next week when the Hornets pay a visit to Flea Hop.
