Traditional jiu jitsu evolved directly from Japanese judo and thus, requires the traditional gi seen on the left. The gi offers more opportunities for chokes, grips, and leverage, but also fosters more sound technique. As an added bonus, the gi absorbs sweat and minimizes slipping out of positions.
No Gi jiu jitsu evolved out of the Gi as a result of the explosion of MMA. While there are fewer opportunities for chokes due to the absence of a lapel, there are more opportunities for on the spot innovation. Most of the “flashy” stuff you see is done in No Gi competition.
We are a Gi academy but tonight we’ll be having our weekly No Gi class! Come check us out.
