There is still a place for the gi in jiu jitsu ❤️
“Is the gi dead?”
Every now and then someone will ask me this.
It just makes me laugh.
I think some of it comes from desperate online influencers who are needy for attention and will say just about anything to get some engagement.
But consider this. . .
BJJ is still having some of its largest gi competitions ever. Growing, not shrinking.
Here’s another interesting idea to chew on.
I have a bearded hunch that in some years, many of the vocal “anti-gi” types will suddenly find themselves wrapped up in a kimono.
Reminds me of back in the day when I got so much s**t from some of the MMA fighters I used to train with. They’d kind of make fun of me for being so focused on BJJ and especially the gi. Fast forward a 10+ years later and some of those fellas are all-in on the South American Ground Karate they made fun of. . . some of them even wear the gi! *GASP* OMG!
Now I ain’t saying everyone will be in the gi. And if you don’t like the gi, that’s fine.
But what I am saying is the gi ain’t going anywhere.
Personally I like them both and enjoy the different styles of BJJ each one creates. pic by
