A cartwheel on a soccer field had shifted a vertebra and herniated multiple discs. I needed surgery. Doctors said recovery would take at least six months. There was a real risk I might never walk again.

So I did physical therapy three times a day instead of once. Morning, noon, evening. I was obsessed.

I recovered far faster than anyone expected.

Resilience is a muscle. The more you work it, the stronger it gets.

The setback wasn’t the story. What I did after it… that was the story!

Whatever floor you’ve found yourself on right now, you’re allowed to decide this isn’t the end.

Llegué a Estados Unidos a los 17 años sin hablar inglés. Lo que traje conmigo valía más que cualquier idioma.

Everyone gets excited about the deal. Almost nobody gets excited about reading the fine print. That’s exactly where businesses go to die.

Years managing multi-million dollar programs taught me this: it’s never the risk you can see coming that sinks you. It’s the one hiding in a clause nobody thought to question.

Seller liens. Employee liabilities. Lease assignments. Asset vs. stock purchase structure. Ian catches these on every deal, the landmines buyers don’t even know to look for.

There’s a difference between taking a risk and taking a blind one. One builds wealth. The other wipes it out.

Don’t sign a purchase agreement without a business attorney reviewing it first.

I left a director-level hospital job to become a project administrator at a tech firm. Best decision I ever made.

The year 2000. Dot-com era. I packed up my apartment in Boston, grabbed my six-month-old and my two-year-old, and moved to Silicon Valley with no job waiting.

I went from director to the lowest rung in a company. No title. No corner office. Starting completely over.

I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Because starting over isn’t the same as failing. You bring every lesson, every skill, every scar with you and that’s exactly what makes you move faster the second time.

The question isn’t whether starting over is scary. It is. The real question is: what’s waiting on the other side of that fear?

At 17, I told my parents I was going to the U.S. for one year. Deep down, I already knew I wasn’t coming back.

No English. No plan. Just a gut feeling that staying was the riskier choice even though it didn’t look that way on paper.

That one decision rewired the rest of my life.

This isn’t a call to be reckless. It’s a reminder that the risks that scare us the most are usually the ones that pay off the biggest.
