Keep up the good work all you Birders!!!!

Your backyard bird feeder may be doing more than attracting hummingbirds — it may be helping reshape their evolution.

A new study published in Global Change Biology suggests that year-round supplemental feeding has played a major role in the rapid expansion and physical changes of Anna’s hummingbirds.

Once mostly limited to the warmer regions of Southern California, Anna’s hummingbirds have now pushed their range hundreds of miles north, reaching places like British Columbia and even Alaska. One major reason? Human-provided feeders have given them a reliable food source in colder regions where survival would have been far more difficult.

But the change is not just geographical.

Researchers found that these tiny birds are also showing shifts in beak shape. In areas with many backyard feeders, Anna’s hummingbirds have developed longer, more tapered bills, which may help them feed quickly in crowded, competitive spaces. Males in feeder-heavy areas also appear to have sharper beak tips, likely useful for defending feeding territory.

At the same time, birds living in colder northern regions show shorter beaks, which may help conserve body heat.

In other words, a simple human habit — hanging a feeder in the backyard — may be helping drive both where these birds live and how their bodies change.
